Hi,
I have set my video capture format to 16:9 (widescreen). The picture in the movie capture preview window is 4:3 and stretched vertically. However when the file is played it is in fact 16:9.
Is there a way I can set the preview window to display the correct aspect ratio during capture ?

Hi
What version of Video Studio are you using.?
Give us more details regarding your capture, are you using a Mini DV camcorder connected via firewire, or are you capturing via a capture card.
What are you actually doing?

Re: Capture Preview Window
I'm using the VS Pro X6 and capturing via a capture card. Project PAL 16:9. If you look closely, the clock in the circle shows that the aspect ratio of the disply picture is not correct.lata wrote:Hi

Re: Capture Preview Window
From the lack of response it appears that this is a known bug

Re: Capture Preview Window
The lack of responses suggest it is NOT a known bug - if it was some one would have said so.
it suggests that no one knows the answer because they have never seen the problem.

Re: Capture Preview Window
Hi Carol
Well I did not see your response of the image till Brian replied to day, mind you I was a little busy yesterday.
Unfortunately each video capture device gives different options within VS to match the device, so a little difficult to replicate your capture.
The capture frame size shows as 720 x 576 that’s a Pal size but could be 4:3 or 16:9.
It is using the correct aspect (widescreen) to capture then I guess the display is just simply wrong and I feel you may have to live with that.
My Panasonic Camcorder view also shows as 4:3 even though I record to 16:9, OK once I capture to the pc.
Look at the Project Properties and make sure they are set to 16:9 (ALT+ENTER) VS 4 should default to 16:9
From the edit timelines Right click a captured file and select properties , what are they?
The Attributes will indicate either 4:3 or 16:9. again I would expect 16:9
From F6 Preferences—tick show messages when inserting……..
Then from a new project your captured files will/should change the project properties to match, as they do appear to be compliant Mpeg2 sizes.
As I say if all captured files are correct I think you will have to live with the preview screens shape?

Re: Capture Preview Window
Thank you Brian and lata for your replies. I have checked the file AR using GSpot, which confirms that it's AR is in fact 16:9. It's just the capture window which is displaying the wrong AR. I have tested it on 2 capture cards, the ATI All-In-Wonder- Radion 9600 and Compro VideoMate C500.

Re: Capture Preview Window
Hi
That is an old post, it refers to Video Studio 10, the older versions of Video Studio used 4:3 as the default display, widescreen was in its infancy.
You have to set the 16:9 aspect ratio from the Start up Screen.
Video Studio X5 and X6 now has that option via Settings-Enable Widescreen Editing, selected by default.
X6 by the way now retains your choice.
One option we have not discussed is Non – Square Pixel Rendering this is set via Project Properties (alt+enter), this option should be selected, and indeed I think it will be selected.
On the rare occasion you may need to de-select NSPR
For your video “Mpeg 720 x 576 DVD Widescreen” it should be selected.
The image you provided does indeed look like 4:3, I assume Video Studio is reading the incoming stream as 4:3,
and thats whats coming out of the capture card.
You should be able to remove the black bars by re-sizing the preview screen, drag the right hand edge to the left.
If the black bars remain then they are part of the video frame.
After you have captured to widescreen the video is loaded to the timelines.
Take a snapshot in Clip mode, does the image have black bars?
It is difficult to simulate your issue as we do not have your capture card.

Re: Capture Preview Window
It appears that my problem is explained in the second example as shown here:
http://www.gdbint.com.au/tech/16x9/
"It is up to the display device (monitor or TV) or the DVD player to apply scaling to get the display aspect ratio correct."
In my case it is the capture window. Because the recorded movie plays fine with the correct 1:25:1 resolution.
