Life of Pi on Blu-Ray disc

Post by Mergatroid »

I have been using WinDVD Pro 2010 for about six months now, and it's always worked well.

This week I purchased the Life of Pi on Blu-ray, and while it will display the first bit with the logo of the company that produced the movie, it will not advance past that point. It gets a black screen and just sits.

I put the disk in my PS3, and it works, However, during the initial boot up, it displays the same logo screen, and then a screen that says "Blu-ray live update failed", with two options "retry" and "continue". If I hit "continue" everything works fine.

Can WinDVD Pro not handle errors like this? Is Corel still updating this version (that I purchased at the end of last year)?

I have set up my HTPC with the object of getting rid of my PS3 since it won't let me play some movies I rip to my NAS due to Sony DRM, so I didn't see any point in keeping it. Now, however, it's looking like WinDVD Pro is no substitute, and that I will have to use both.

When it first happened, I completely removed WINDVD Pro 2010 and reinstalled it, and reupdated it in the hopes that something was wrong with the installation. Now it appears as though it's a problem with the software itself.

Has anyone else come across this particular fault?

Hi

I do not own WinDVD so cannot replicate this.

When you say you “reupdated it” do you mean installed the Update Patch

Yes, I applied the last two patches.

Is there any way to inform Corel of this so they can address the problem? I would hate to see this go unrepaired until the software is no longer supported. I see on their site that I cannot even request support after 90 days without paying for it (oh joy).

I have no intention of paying to ask a question, or inform them of a fault with their software. It really makes me a sad panda to see such a simple error trip up software like this.

There are a number of recent Fox Blu-rays with this problem. It also happens using WinDVD Pro 11 with Skyfall, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter and Taken 2. They all have the same new Java menu or function that WinDVD does not handle. I have given up on Corel, as this problem has been available to be fixed since last October. That was when Cyberlink fixed the problem for PowerDVD. I reported the problem recently to sMedio, who has licensed WinDVD and is apparently making an effort to further develop and support their version of it. They are offering an upgrade discount to WinDVD users and hopefully they will fix this problem in a timely fashion as I would prefer to use WinDVD rather than PowerDVD, which does not handle my HD audio hardware very gracefully.

sMedio has recently fixed this Fox blu-ray problem and it is in the current release of their version of WinDVD.
