Re: Burning Standard Def to Bluray
I will have to dig out one of my hybrid discs to see about playing it on my computer, though I recall I did so when they were first produced. However, I can't recall off-hand what software player I used for that. My hardware Blu-Ray player is a PlayStation 3 and as I said above, it has no difficulty playing such discs. I will get back to you when I find a disc and test it.
As for producing one, you don't use the Create Disc > Blu-Ray option, but the Create Disc > AVCHD option, which specifically makes BDMV folders on standard DVDs (and of course allows creation of menus).

Re: Burning Standard Def to Bluray
Hmmm. I am away from my computer for few days. I don't recall there being a AVCHD option for Create Disc. I'm using VS 5. If there were, I would have tried it. The Blu-Ray option creates a BDMV (and CERTIFICATE) folder. I have several AVCHD as well as Blu-Ray options for making video files, though. None of them makes menus, only Create Disk.Ken Berry wrote:As for producing one, you don't use the Create Disc > Blu-Ray option, but the Create Disc > AVCHD option, which specifically makes BDMV folders on standard DVDs (and of course allows creation of menus).
It wouldn't let me write a DVD blank using Create Disk | Blu-Ray. I made my Blu-Ray on a DVD blank by using ImgBurn to copy the folders.
I am not reallly interested in using DVD media. What I want to do is way too long for that. I want to make Blu-Ray movies. I only tried writing a short clip to DVD blanks when I couldn't play the folders. Neither works, which doesn't lend me much confidence.
I guess the real question for me right now is whether to invest in a Blu-Ray writer. Can I expect the disks created using Create Disc to work, either written directly to the BR-R blank or the folders copied with ImgBurn. The only reason I consider ImgBurn is that many people are having trouble burning BR blanks directly. (It fails at the end with an error 5.0.0.)

Re: Burning Standard Def to Bluray
VS X5 has the AVCHD option under Share/Create Disc and then the dropdown menu containing AVCHD.
I am in the process of creating a AVCHD folder set (with a menu) using VS X5. I will try playing it using my VLC. I will then burn it to a DVD and try to play it on my computer again using VLC. I have neither a BD writer or player.
I will also "burn" the folder to a USB stick and try to play that on my HD TV through its USB port. I know I can play HD videos that way but have never tried a folder set with a menu.

Well let us know what happens with that. I suspect you will find, though, that it will only allow you to play the individual clips in the STREAM sub-folder... But it would be nice to be proven wrong!I will also "burn" the folder to a USB stick and try to play that on my HD TV through its USB port.

Well, I can't prove you wrong, Ken. The HD TV will not play the folder set on the USB stick but only the individual files in the Stream folder. The same thing on my PC.

Canuck -- do you have a stand-alone Blu-Ray player? If so, you could try plugging the USB stick into that...

No, I don't have any kind of BlueRay player. I propably never will bother with burning any kind of BlueRay discs since I have a feeling that they will be disappearing over the next 5 years or so.

Re: Burning Standard Def to Bluray
Hi Kenneth
I do not have a Bluray burner either, but have created a hybrid using the Create Disc Avchd option. (burn HD files to Standard DVD disc)
However I am NOT able to play these on the pc as I do not have a Bluray DVD Burner/Player.
They do play on the TV via my Bluray Player.

Re: Burning Standard Def to Bluray
I was mistaken. Now that I am back to my computer, I see there is an AVCHD option. I tried it with the following results.canuck wrote:VS X5 has the AVCHD option under Share/Create Disc and then the dropdown menu containing AVCHD.
DVD:
PowerDVD: Plays Ok with menus.
VLC: Couldn't open. (I now have VLC 2.0.6, formerly had 2.0.5)
Nero Blue-ray Player: Has menus but with no video and no text on them. Otherwise works if you can guess where to click.
Plays Ok with menus on my TV-set player (Panosonic DMP-BD65).
Folders:
Windows Media Player: Plays the movie, no menus.
VLC: Gets error about can't play UNDEF, but does play the movie, no menus.
PowerDVD: Doesn't let me open the folders.
Nero Blu-ray Player: Has menus but with no video and no text on them. Otherwise works if you can guess where to click.
The bottom line is that testing by creating folders is of little value AFAICT.
Thanks for the information about AVCHD. I didn't really know what it was before except that it was associated with camcorders. (I don't have a camcorder.) I now know you can make blu-ray movies on a DVD blank with it. However I need the capacity of real blu-ray discs. So far I have found little information about whether you can really do that with VS 5. Sooner or later I will probably just break down and buy a writer, then see if it works.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Burning Standard Def to Bluray
Hi Trevor. There were two menu packs in Do More. (I have VS 5 Ultimate. I don't know if that mattered or not.) I had 8 Blu-Ray menu templates, now 27. I had 37 DVD templates, now 71.lata wrote:Hi Kenneth
How many menu templates do you see in the Bluray gallery
Have you installed the menu packs from the Do More section.?
Thanks.
