I'm a pretty new Videostudio Pro X5 user and am starting to get a little frustrated that the application seems to crash on me frequently. I get an "unspecified error" that goes out to a dump file, 11 of them in only 3 editing sessions. It seems to crash at pretty random times, but usually when I try to apply some sort of editing feature to a video segment, such as dragging a filter or a transition onto a video.
Incidently, I find it rather odd the instructions that accompany the crash dump file are to contact Technical Support and provide the dump file, yet apparently files of that type can't be uploaded? Can anyone help?

Re: Unspecified errors
Welcome to the forums -- though I am sorry you are having troubles.
Unfortunately, you have not really provided enough information on which to base a reply. In particular, we need to know the format and Properties of the video you are trying to edit, and perhaps even where the video came from. To get the Properties, right click on a clip in the timeline and copy ALL its Properties here, please -- or do a screen grab and upload as an attachment. That way we might at least have a handle on the problem.
If the video is, for instance, AVCHD high definition mpeg-4, then that requires a pretty powerful computer to edit and play it smoothly. VS has a feature called SmartProxy to make that easier. It makes a standard def copy ('proxy') of the high def original video. That is much easier to play and edit. Then when you are satisfied, the edits are all applied to the high def originals. You might want to try that.
As for the dump files, no one here understands them anyway, so it is a good thing you could not post them here. Just to be clear, we are not Corel employees. We merely use the Corel.com server as the basis of our Board. But we are all just users like you who volunteer their time to try to help other users sort out their problems.

Re: Unspecified errors
Thanks for the quick reply! I've attached an image of the properties for one of the clips in my video. They're pretty much all from the same source -- a Contour ROAM POV camera that saves files in Quicktime format.
I may also check out the SmartProxy feature.

Re: Unspecified errors
Hi:
i get the same error message when crashes occur. And where in blazes do you suppose we are supposed to send these dump files? I can't find a place to do that on the Corel Tech support site. Do we just email them for fun? And I'm running porx3 and prox5.(on two different machines) It's an interesting situation.

Re: Unspecified errors
I couldn't find any way to send the dump files to Corel Technical Support, and am not sure they would do anything even if I could. After scouring this message board I did stumble on a few people having success by disabling hardware acceleration settings in the VideoStudio preferences. I haven't tried it yet, but figured it'd be worth a shot.
There were also mentions of issues with Quicktime version compatibility, which may be a contributor to my crashing woes since pretty much all my video clips are .mov's. I'll push that off as a last resort since I do have iTunes on this particular system and don't want to cripple it.

Re: Unspecified errors
At one time Quick Time Version 7.5.5 was installed with Video Studio.
If you do revert to an earlier version it may change I-Tunes performance
If you do not use I-Tunes try this version.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL26
There are some details regarding QuickTime on the Corel Knowledge base
VideoStudio Pro X5 - Quicktime is required to open MOV files
QuickTime (.MOV) video files support with Studio

Re: Unspecified errors
AFAIK sending the dump files to Corel can only be done once you have opened your Corel (registration) account on Corel.com That is totally different to registration on this user to user web board. Your Corel account should be established when you first registered a Corel product. One into your account, you click on Support and go from there.
But as I think you are already aware, there is no point in posting DMP files here on this Board as no one here understands anything at all about them... We are users just like you...

Re: Unspecified errors
Well, disabling the hardware preferences definitely did not help. Still crashing right and left. I'm running Quicktime 7.7.3 and am somewhat hesitant to downgrade it since I do use iTunes on this system.

Re: Unspecified errors
Hi
The Quick Time Mov video uses Ambarella AVC encoder.
I viewed my version of Video Studio but do not see that particular codec so would assume it is not installed by video studio.
Do you have this codec installed on your pc? If not then that may be the problem.
Does the camera come with its own software, installing that may provide the Ambarella codec.
