Video Studio will no longer let me capture

Post by Ramirezi »

Hey, I have a question, maybe somebody will be able to help me out.

Up until yesterday, I have been able to capture with my Video Studio 8. Now it says: "Either no video capture device is installed on this system, or no device is connected"

The only thing that has changed is my dad installed a new DVD drive and also a DVD-R drive. I am still able to capture in Capwiz and Ulead DVD Movie Factory.

I used to be able to capture with Video Studio and Movie Factory but not Capwiz, so this is something very odd to me.

Anyone have any suggestions?

That sounds pretty strange; maybe something has been disturbed in the registry during th einstallation of the DVD drive.
A fairly standard option if you're not sure what is happening is to reinstall - maybe you would like to do that.
Best of luck.

What capture device are you using and precisely what pieces of software were installed with the installation of the new DVD and DVD-R drives?

Possibly there is a conflict or another Ulead product overwrote or deleted the capture device for VideoStudio.

I'm using the ADS USB 2.0 external capture device and no software was installed when my dad installed the drives. I uninstalled VideoStudio 8 and tried reinstalling it and still got that error message.

If it's any help this is a posted statement by Ulead:
I believe you may have to go to the ADS website and download the latest
capture drivers for the device.
Although this isn't specific to your posted problem. It relates to another
problem that can occur with the ADS device. Note the last statement
about capturing.

Hope this helps,

DVD Movie Factory with ADS Instant DVD cause shut down

Problem:
When User uses DVD Movie Factory and ADS Instant DVD, the error message pops up:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

Error Message:
"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

Solution:
There's a solution may help you to use DVD movie Factory other features without detecting USB Instant DVD.
1. Please open Dswplug.ini located in :\Program Files\Ulead Systems\DVD Movie Factory\Video ToolBox folder.
2. Find [DriverSec] section and add the "Stream Machine USB video source" in the end of the string.
[DriverSec]
AviDisableDriverName=Microsoft-Adaptec DV 1394 capture, Stream Machine USB video source
MpegDisableDriverName=Microsoft-Adaptec DV 1394 capture, Stream Machine USB video source
After you add it, you should use DVD Movie Factory then.
Note: This solution only solves the crash problem but it can't make DVD movie Factory use ADS Instant DVD to capture video.

I have everything up to date.

Like I said, everything worked until those drives were put in and suddenly only VideoStudio no longer works. Ulead Movie Factory does and it's just really odd because usually when I've had problems VideoStudio is the only program that would let me capture.

Let me rephrase that, Video Studio capture no longer works.

Ramirezi,
I use the same capture device (ADS Instant DVD2). Frankly, Ulead's support for this device has been hit or miss for the past 18 months. First it did not work with VS7 so I captured with Capwiz. I highly recommend this product because it is simple to use and has never crashed on me.

History:
Ulead announced an official "fix" for IDVD2 which never worked for me.
Then someone on the previous forum discovered a solution (Search the old forum for ADSCirrusUSB2.dll) that actually worked -- for a while -- until I installed the 8.01 update and XP SP2. One of the two apparently broke the charm. IDVD2 has not worked since then and I have not had the time to find out why. Someone on the previous forum found that if he restored the \Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD to its VS8.0 status, his IDVD2 device worked. I tried this and it did not work for me.

My advice is to capture with Capwiz directly to Mpeg2 files and edit them directly in VS8.01.
Follow the Recommended Procedure and you will be a happy man.

Woman, lolz. Hm, I remember that fix. I downloaded it when it first came out and it messed everything up. I didn't even have SP2 so it couldn't have been that, still refuse to download it onto my comp.

Do you think the capture in Capwiz is better then capturing in the Ulead Movie Factory? From my past experience, Capwiz has always had better results compared to Video Studio. I guess as long as I can edit in Video Studio, I can make due. I'm afraid to download anything that might mess up my other two working capture devices unless I know for sure that it will fix Video Studio and not mess up Capwiz and Movie Factory.

That's really strange if you can capture in MF.

You probably already know this but are you selecting the correct
capture Plug-in?
Tools > Change Capture Plugin.......Ulead Mpg Capture Plugin

I'm curious, are the new dvd drives USB/Firewire or internal.

We have been looking at capturing devices to use in a school system.
Been looking at this device because it needs to be portable.
The device needs to be USB (no firewire on some of the machines).

It still doesn't work with the correct capture device (under tools). My drives are internal.

I don't know if this will help but it's worth looking at:

If you can capture in MF then look at the .INI settings of MF.
In troubleshooting, the MF settings are correct (maybe you should
back them up before they also change).

VS uses similar settings in the .INI configuration files.
To access the configuration files you must enable show hidden
folders. Do you know where they are located?

Documents & Settings > All Users > Application Data > Ulead Systems > etc.

Hope this helps,

Yeah, I know how. Are you saying that I should also copy the ini files into VS? I'll hurry up and back those up because I surely don't want to lose all capturing priveleges.

I looked for the ini file under Application data and they aren't there, so I checked under the Programs and all there are, are the dll files and dat so I don't know where they are lurking.
