How to load *.psd file into PSP and change objects?

Post by pstein »

In the past I created a picture with multiple objects (rectangles, colors, text labels, lines,...).
As far as I remember I saved it with PSP vX2 into a *.psd file.
This kind of file stores not only the final picture but the intermediate manipulation steps/layers as well.

Ok, now, some months later, I want to resume the picture design process.

Therefore I started PSP vX2 and load the mentioned *.psd file.

Much to my surprise I found no way to e.g. select a certain text line shown at the bottom of the picture and to edit it (again).
How does this work?
Do I have to tell PS somehow "re-tokenize all layers" ?

Maybe (I am not sure) the *.psd file was saved by Photoshop and not by PSP. Does this matter?
Are *.psd files compatible between Photoshop and PSP? Can I find out the previously saving program?
I can imagine that this is somehow stored in the header of the *.psd file.

Thank you
Peter

PSP does not support all layer types in a PSD. Including, vector shapes.

The help files make note of this, though sadly in the worst place possible. Under the "Merging Layers" section of the help files. "When you save to the PSD (Photoshop) format, the image maintains raster and adjustment layers, but vector layers and art media layers are converted to raster layers."

Never mind...... Levi (a much better source of info) beat me to it.
Adverts for Corel products when you close PSP don't bother me.

It took me a while to understand this (don't know why my brain wouldn't digest!). When you save as .psd, and you have ANY vector layers--and TEXT is a vector layer (that's what i wasn't getting, LOL!)--psp warns you that it will not save vector information. I have started saving in both if i want to work on an image in both so that i can always come back to psp. Also, you can't make changes to text saved in psp--changes to a raster (read: plain old image) layer!

I have just tested in PSP X2 .
1. I loaded an image Promoted to Raster
2. Magic wand selected image background and deleted. Used eraser tool to clean up.
3. Duplicated layer
3. Placed some text on the top layer.
(now three layers raster1 duplicate of raster 1 and vector with text .
Saved that as a .psp file deleted image on workspace.
Reloaded psp file and text was there as a vector and editable by clicking on the text.

I also tested by saving the history as a quickscript and then loaded the original image and applied the quickscript which gave me same result with editable text.
In X4 if you select the history steps and then right click you can save as a quick script or a normal script.
Saving as psd does not support this.

Just be sure, you mean PSD right? Because a PSP is a valid PaintShop Pro image extension. And in my test, the vector was transformed into a raster layer when saving to a Photoshop Document file (PSD).
