I have some questions concerning new hardware - I am now still using Version 1.1.0.10 but maybe corel solves the problems with 1.1.0.30 and openCL will be a factor too (still hoping ASP developement will go on ...):
now 4 GB RAM - new PC: 16 GB - does it make sense to upgrade to 32 GB?
new PC: Intel Core i7-3770K - 4 x 3,5GHz - would 8 core AMD FX-8350 - 8 x 4,0GHz be the better choice ?
new PC: 256GB Samsung SSD 840 PRO SATA3
new PC: 1024MB Sapphire RadeonHD7750 ULTIMATE - HDMI/DVI-I/DP
WIN 7 64 bit and Linux (now WIN XP and Suse 11.4 64) new PC maybe Ubuntu - which Ubuntu would be the best choice?
Is it enough to put cache and catalog on the SSD (now cache & catalog on internal hard-disk - photos - raw and developed on a Qnap NAS) or should I give the raws to the SSD too and if they are done put them on the NAS or an external disk?
new PC

Re: new PC
Depends on what else you do wit the box....hannes_hab wrote:now 4 GB RAM - new PC: 16 GB - does it make sense to upgrade to 32 GB?
I'd get an hex core I7...new PC: Intel Core i7-3770K - 4 x 3,5GHz - would 8 core AMD FX-8350 - 8 x 4,0GHz be the better choice ?
Stay away from gamer cards. Get a FirePro. At least the V4900, the smaller ones are not much cheaper but much slower.new PC: 1024MB Sapphire RadeonHD7750 ULTIMATE - HDMI/DVI-I/DP
I just got the V4900 yesterday. I get close to 30% speed increase in D700 conversions...
I favor Xubuntu. less bloat.WIN 7 64 bit and Linux (now WIN XP and Suse 11.4 64) new PC maybe Ubuntu - which Ubuntu would be the best choice?
I would think that is too much hassle... Depends very much on your workflow. Is it enough to put cache and catalog on the SSD (now cache & catalog on internal hard-disk - photos - raw and developed on a Qnap NAS) or should I give the raws to the SSD too and if they are done put them on the NAS or an external disk?
For me a NAS is only archive. I have all images locally on a harddrive.

Re: new PC
thank you for your answer!
For me the advantage of the NAS is that I can get access to my pictures from WIN, Linux and a second PC and laptop ...
Today one reason for working on linux is that working is (feels to be) faster than on Windows (ASP, Autopano, Scribus, printing - I use Qimage there but it is so slow ...) - I think with new hardware and WIN operating system - there will be a leap forward on WIN too - I like linux - but - especially if ASP will die - maybe switch to WIN and have less problems ...
On Linux: AutopanoGiga, Scribus, PhotoZora etc but I think I will use the old PC too - so I may split the work ...Depends on what else you do wit the box...
I want a small and silent box - don't know if its possible to get it and to have the power too - for my ASP version (think I dont need a new camera soon) I thought graphic power is not very important?Stay away from gamer cards. Get a FirePro. At least the V4900, the smaller ones are not much cheaper but much slower.
So you have an SSD and everything is on that internal SSD afx?I have all images locally on a harddrive.

Re: new PC
I was quite impressed how silent the fan in the FirePro is, especially after I heard it is noisy, I was prepared to replace it. So far it is not an issue (I usa a Lian Li case which is quite silent). But I only had it two days so far...hannes_hab wrote:I want a small and silent box - don't know if its possible to get it and to have the power too - for my ASP version (think I dont need a new camera soon) I thought graphic power is not very important?
OpenCL is not really needed, though it can provide a performance boost depending on a lot of factors. On my Linux box (Quad i7) with an Nvidia card OpenCL actually makes AS slower. The Windows box (AMD quad Phenom) with the AMD gets a speed boost.
No, hard drive, not SSD....So you have an SSD and everything is on that internal SSD afx?I have all images locally on a harddrive.
Well, if you are happy with the speed...For me the advantage of the NAS is that I can get access to my pictures from WIN, Linux and a second PC and laptop ...
The key reason for me to run a win box is availability of imaging software...Today one reason for working on linux is that working is (feels to be) faster than on Windows (ASP, Autopano, Scribus, printing - I use Qimage there but it is so slow ...) - I think with new hardware and WIN operating system - there will be a leap forward on WIN too - I like linux - but - especially if ASP will die - maybe switch to WIN and have less problems ...

Re: new PC
on linux: fast when starting work, slows down when editing layers (after NN) is applied, or having Scribus and Autopano open tooWell, if you are happy with the speed...
- so this seems to mean - more RAM
so far I am happy on linux - can do everything I want here - in future (what will be with ASP?) maybe imatch 5 will be an option too...The key reason for me to run a win box is availability of imaging software...
