I had this exact same problem (VS X4), sound would play on the clip ok, but not on the project. It probably happened after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
Initial testing shows that by ticking "Enable 5.1 Surround" from the settings menu drop down has fixed my problem as detailed here.

I suspect that your project properties do not match your video files properties, X4 limits Project Properties to Avi and Mpeg, there is no HD options.
For audio Digital Dolby 5.1 is available, X4 has also provided a Surround Sound check box via Settings that would modify the project properties given you that warning.
Things have improved since X4.
The latest version of Video Studio would automatically set project properties to match our video file, that would set the correct audio for our video, DD 5.1 if that is used.
You have updated your pc to use 64 bit and Windows 10 yet still run X4 32bit program?
