Newbie editing question

Post by Fallinstarzz »

Hi gang ..just a day into Paintshop Pro been playing around trying out things...learning on my own, reading the guides, faqs on how to use everything!!! Problem is I created an image changed some colors added some text just seeing how things work saved it as a jpeg...when I reopen it I cant for the life of me figure out how to be abe to edit it once it is saved! Do I need to save it in another format first??? Actually wondering how you save it as a template??? Sorry if this is a minor question but as I said I am new to this...Thanks in advance....

To keep your layers in-tact, you need to save in PSP format, not a jpg as a jpg compresses all the layers into one. A psp image preserves the layers, selections and alpha channels so each time you open it, they are all there. As a template, you need to save it the way you want it be each time you start a new image and save it with a new name each time you do any editing so you don't re-write your initial image.

Another newbie question..may as well just ask here instead of making a new topic....I am making a football invitation for my sons birthday...I opened one new project page made the football field no problem ..I opened another layer and uploaded a football that I want to place on top of the field in the other window (on the football is where I will write the text details for the party) ...when I go to paste the football it has a white background and covers up my entire green field...I tried everything and cant make the ball transparent or get rid of the white background...how do I get the football layered on top of the field ...Thanks....

I gather that your football is on a white background. Use the magic Wand tool with Mode Add, Match Mode RGB value or Brightness Tolerance set to about 10, Feather 1 and select the white background and then hit the delete key and you should have the football on a transparent background (presuming you have Promoted the Football image from a background to a raster layer). Paste that on the green field layer and use the move tool to move it into position.

Ok when I do all of the above ...when I tap the white background with the wand it just puts a dotted moving line all around the football and when I hit delete it does nothing....

I am not sure why when I tap the white background why the dotted lines go around the football now ...so when I hit delete it deletes the football....

After you have promoted the layer to raster and upped the tolerance, maybe 20, to select all the white that you have showing, then press Invert (located under the selections tab). This inverts your selection so only the football is selected, choose copy from the menu, open your field image, press "paste as a new layer" and that will paste the football into the other image. The main thing is to have a little feather which will make your selection a little smoother. Increasing the tolerance selects more of the pixels that match the white - this way you get a nice smooth football edge.

I realized I made some errors here and have edited this post.

When that happens, it usually means you haven't promoted the image from being "background" to a "raster" layer. It's easy to do. Just have the layer's palette open and double click on the "Background" layer that shows up. A dialog box will open, which you just click the "OK" button at the bottom. Your layer will now be named "Raster 1" and you can now delete and edit easily.

Sorry to be such a pain but just doing this with no trianing so learning on my own....here is what I get now http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s65 ... 6ba9ed.jpg...

I also noticed my background goes into a raster layer as well so perhaps I am not setting it up correctly from the start...here is what I do....

I open a new 4x6 file then open the field image in another page copy and paste it into the first new page....should I just open the field image from the start as open or new???
After that I open the football image do all you said above again do I open the football image in another page, new page or just open it or do I open the football image right ontop of the field image then use the wand...lol...I am determined to get this....Thanks for all your help....

Is there any guide or steps that I can go read to teach me how to do this???

Because the football has white on it which matches the white background you may have to use another selection tool - Freehand > Smart edge or Edge Seeker. Once you have your football selected and you have promoted that image to a raster layer so it no longer says Background you can then do Selections> Invert so now you will have the marching " ants" around the football and also around the border of the white area.
Now you can hit delete key on your keyboard and that should dispose of your white background leaving your football intact. Do Selections > Select none and you should now have your football image ready for copy and paste on the green field image.
There are a few videos on Youtube on PSP which may be useful
Just do a search there onn Paintshop pro .

OR
another feature you might try with your football image is Image > Object Extractor
Look up a video on the Object extractor from Corel site to see how it works. Just tested it on your image and seems to work very well.

That didnt work...I used the freehand tool got rid of all the background ...copied then pasted the football onto the field and all it showed was the outline shape of the football in the form of dotted moving lines there was no football image at all just an oval in dotted lines on the field....
