Help please! Someone has sent me a disk of a video in DV format produced via Roxio software. I was hoping to import this into ProX5 to extract some of it - yes, it's with their permission! - to use it in another film I am making. No can do basically. I have been back to the people who sent it and they say I should not have this problem as DV format should be pretty much recognised by almost any editing software!
Any ideas please appreciated.
Thanks
Viddynick.

Re: DV format
You should be able to do it - what are you doing to import it.
What error messages do you get ?
have you tried just RIGHT clicking over the timeline and choosing "Insert Video" and browsing to the files and selecting them.
I do not think you can use "Import Digital Media files" if that is what you are trying - that looks for VOB files on a DVD.

Re: DV format
Brian, thanks for your supersonic response - appreciated. Yes, I am trying to import from digital media! Error message says no content! I have tried what you suggest without success also - but grateful for this, as I didn't know i could do this! Silly question but when I open the files on the disk on my desktop - which I have copied to - ie the yellow folders, should I have the film files showing? If so, I haven't got any but I thought this was because my pc is not reading the files being Roxio - I do not have Roxio software on my pc. I am beg. to think the disks are empty, save for the yellow folders which should contain the content. Do you think this might be the case! I am not an expert on files and folders but as I get "no content" am beg. to think this might be the answer. Thanks for help on this. grateful. Viddynick.

re: the last email. PS: I have also tried navigating to my DVD drive and importing to timeline without success also. Viddynick

Re: DV format
In Windows (My) Computer/Windows Explorer, look at the disc and its contents. If you can see the DV files on the disc, then simply Copy and Paste them somewhere on your hard drive, and then try Insert Video within VS.

Re: DV format
Cheers Ken. I have done this already - all I can see is Roxio restore, a launcher file, a disk index file and .............mov.spn file When I open these yellow folders, there is nothing (maybe that's right) but I have tried highlighting these files from the timeline but they don't load! Hmmmm????

Re: DV format
No ... any DV format video would be there with either an .avi extension if it came from a PC based computer or else with the .dv extension if it came from an Apple/Mac. Since it was made with Roxio, I would assume it would use the .avi extension. In other words, if you cannot see anything with that sort of extension, it would appear your earlier guess about there being no video on the disc, could be right.

Re: DV format
Thanks for your response once more - appreciate the explanation. I have opened the files in explorer and cannot see either DV or AVI files - only dlls. etc. so am convinced they are not on there!
I did manage to find another disk they sent me some time back of another film and I imported this without problem via digital media option - when I opened this files folders, I could clearly see VOB files.
So I am writing back to them on this, in the hope they can resend me the disks with perhaps VOB files on. I am not an expert on the "engine" side and when something doesn't work, you think it's your own fault straight away! Now I think it's their fault! Thanks so much for you quick responses one and all - really appreciated as always. Viddynick.

Re: DV format
Hi Viddynick
Just to add, if the first files were Vob types this would indicate that the disc is a DVD, a standard DVD holds 4.3Gb of data.
Vob types are Mpeg2.
DV types as mentioned would have the extension Avi, the files DV-Avi are quite large at 13 Gb per hour, generally we would expect DV-Avi from a Mini-DV type Camcorder.
It does seem as though the disc somewhat unusual, I wonder if it contains project files associated with the Roxie program.??
