I've download the Video Studio 9 demo, twice, and installed, uninstalled, then installed again. Both times when I click the icon to start it, I get the initial splashscreen, then a small box that says "Codec TrialActivation has a serious error."
It will not get past that.
I did the same thing on another computer, and it installed just fine, with no problems. The stumbling block on the first computer apparently is the Activation software, but it worked perfectly on the second system.
Both systems are using WinXP, SP2, 1gig RAM (on 1st), 512 RAM (on 2nd). Ample hard drive space, and both systems have P4 2gig+ processors.
Any ideas what's wrong with the first system? Why am I blocked? I would very much prefer to use VS9 on the 1st computer.
Thanks for any advice!

I have the exact same problem and am looking forward to any responses from the Gurus out there!!
I personally re-installed six times, with each effort doing something different. In all, I disabled my firewall & AV, removed all running programs, washed & defragged, open and closed internet connections, removed windows installer 3.1, cleaned registry everytime (inclusive of removing old file/path references), removed all traces of ulead programs and that's about as much as I know how to do.
nouncer, do have any different programs between the computers?
Looking forward to any advice - Thanks.

Make sure the firewall settings in XP SP2 allow the program access. Also, you should disable any virus scanner for the duration of the install.
personally, I feel, the video editing system should not be connected to the internet and therefore does not need a virus scanner or firewall. It also should not run any other programs like word processors etc. If you need to have that on the same machine, create a dual boot set up.

Try this. Click "start" "run" and type msconfig and hit enter. Go to the first tab of the dialogue box and selct "selective start up." Uncheck "load start up items." Close the box and reboot. Then try the install. Whether successful or not don't forget to go back and set the system to its original sart up configuration.

Thanks heinz-oz. So are saying that VS9 is an internet based install/setup?
I'm not sure about nouncer's install, but what I failed to mention was that everytime I installed it never quite completed. The installshield program got as far as updating the registry and then the screen went black. It would appear that the install did complete correctly as I would have expected a clean up of the temp folder and probably a restart of my computer. When trying to remove VS9 through the add/remove program utility I am unable to. I get the following message:
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (439)
pAPP:Ulead VideoStudio 9
PVENDOR:Ulead Systems
PGUID:88F92798-59AB-474F-B40D-1EC5F782F7EE
$7.1.100.1248
@Windows XP Service Pack 2 (2600) IE 6.0.2900.2180
The only way I can remove the program from the add/remove utility is by using an unistall program called Tenebril. I still have to go back and delete all the folders though.
Thanks - DJPOD

No, I did not say that at all, because it ain't. When nouncer said trial activation, I thought he was talking about the on line registration of the software. XP SP2 created a lot of issues with many a program and the suggestion from a previous post here is a sound one. Stop anything from starting up that you do not need for the install and try again.

I thought so, I was just double checking.
Anyway, I did as you recommended. No programs running and additionally performed a clean uninstall, clean up of the registry and a complete wash.....It still didn't work
Thanks for the suggestions though, I guess I'll keep scratching my head with this one.

Here's the latest... and it's good news!
After having no success starting up the Video Studio 9 program once it had been installed (it would hang on the "Trial Activation" startup splashscreen), I took a cue from somebody else on this forum, and decided to shut down everything that wasn't necessary.
I Googled a free program called "EndItAll"... it stops all running processes except the ones you want. After I "ended it all", I reinstalled the VS9 download file, it installed without a hitch, and the VS9 program started up normally, with the initial box about "having 30 days left on the free trial", etc.
Problem solved.
Now I just have to figure out how to use VS9. I'm probably going to just go ahead and buy it. And yes, before I do any work with it, I'm definitely going to shut down all unnecessary background processes.
Thanks to eveybody who responded...
