Fading music in the project

Post by EF37A »

I have assembled a project and shortened the sound track in the last segment. How exactly can I fade out that last segment only?

Hello

From Timeline View, double clicking any clip will open the options panel which shows below the library.
To the right of the digital clock are volume controls, can adjust the 100% , also use the Fade In/ Fade out.

Set the default duration of the fades via F6--Preferences

Thanks for that. I have double clicked on the last clip and then clicked once on the fade out icon. The music does not fade out but still stops abruptly at the end of the clip.

So I still have the problem!

In case this has anything to do with it, I had previously shortened the clip by dragging the arrow, to make it finish when the video finishes.

to observe if the volume reduction is working you MUST be in "Project" mode - playing in 'clip' mode will always play the clip unaltered.

you can confirm if a fade is applied by changing to "Sound Mixer" mode by clicking on the note with sound wave under the preview window - you will then see the video displayed as a blank with the sound line going through it and fading down to zero = look at the image below for clarification.

you can extend the length of the fade by using the mouse cursor to slide that little square block to the left.

OK, breakthrough! The problem was that under F6 I had fadeout set at 1 second. Too short to perceive. I found this by observing the line as you said, and saw that it was a sudden roll off. Changed the fade out time to 4 secs and all is well (nearly... see below!). Can see it and hear it.

Now a fresh probem. After applying fade out, there is a sudden surge (1/4 sec?) of full volume right at the end. Can't seem to get rid of that! Makes a very ugly ending!

OK - try this

when in sound mixer view expand the timeline to it's maximum - that is - look just above the right hand end of the timeline at the small slider there - using you mouse cursor slide the knob to the right hand end.

now pan along the timeline until you are at the very end and study the volume line - if it surges up suddenly at the end or does not fall smoothly to zero adjust the curve - you do this by hovering the mouse cursor over one of the square blocks until it changes to a little pointing hand.

drag the block down as far as it will go - including the block under the yellow bar - to get a smooth and complete fade that volume line must fall smoothly to the zero - which is at the bottom of the blue section not down into the black underneath.

I made a short tutorial about this type of sound editing a while back - it may help you understand - have a look here :-

Great! On expanding the timeline I found a small chunk of audio full volume on its own at the end. I deleted that. I also found I could edit the audio on the original captured clip, and faded that as well. Perfect. Thanks heaps!
