Sequences?

Post by JimDodds »

I am working on a video that is 60 mins+ and has a couple of hundred various video, audio and photo clips. It is terribly
cumbersome to work with and I wonder if there is any feature in VideoStudio comparable to the Sequence feature found
in Final Cut and in a low cost PC video editor from NCH called VideoPad. It would be so much easier if I could break my
hour long video into 5 or 6 sequences I could edit separately but keep in connection with each other. Any thoughts?
Thank you :D

it is quite easy in VideoStudio to split your main project into as many "mini projects" as you like and create a .vsp file for each one.

If you want to see how the overall project is going at any time then just put all of the .vsp files into your timeline and play them through - then if you want to do more editing to any one of them simply open up the .vsp and edit just the one mini project.

You could then just put all .vsp's back in the timeline and proceed to burn a DVD but I have found you can lose video quality that way - so there are two alternatives I use - both start with rendering each vsp to it's own DVD compliant video - now the choices - either put all of the rendered videos into the main programme timeline sequentially and continue to make your DVD with only one choice on the menu - OR - put each rendered video into the timeline in the "Create Disc" window - this will create a DVD with 'X' choices on the menu where X is the number of Videos - but on all VS DVD menus simply pressing play when the menu opens plays through all titles any way - plus you have a choice similar to chapters to start any one of the minis by selecting it and pressing play.

I find the latter choice useful for projects where not everyone may want or need to watch the whole vide.

Hmmmm. Thanks for your reply, but this is very confusing. I've heard this suggestion before
but if I try to load a .vsp file into my media library it says file format mismatch and won't do it.
Drag and drop won't work either. I have VideoStudio X4 BTW. Puzzling.

No you cannot import them into the library but you should be able to insert them in the timeline.

can you try RIGHT click in the timeline and from the pop-out choose "Insert Video"

when the "open Video file" browser window opens look towards the bottom to a drop down labelled "files of type" - open the drop down and see if you can select (towards the bottom of the list) "Corel VideoStudio Project file (.vsp)"

if you can select that option browse to one of your vsp files and click on it - you may have to wait a second or two for the file name to appear in the 'file name' box under the browse window - it may not be instantaneous - once that name appears it should be possible to click 'open' and the project will appear in VdeoStudio as one block - no matter how many components are in that project

Good grief! Even more confusing  If I right click on the Timeline and scroll down I CAN select .vsp, but when I click Open
I just get that same "File Format Mismatch" I don't think this will really help, anyway. If you take a look at the way, for instance,
VideoPad works, you have separate tabs above the Timeline for separate sequences, so one section of your long video is
all that's open, and you can make out the details without endlessly zooming way out and way in (FinalCut has this too - GRRR!)
I am a dyed in the wool Corel user but I'd sure like to have this feature!

Odd - I note that you are working in X4 but have you ever opened these vsp files in X5 - a trial version perhaps.

In X4 if you go to "File >> Open Project" can you open the vsp file which gives the error.

Yes, I can open all the VSP files and they all give the same error.
And if that would only bring the project in as a block
that isn't openable or editable that isn't what I want anyway.
How do I put an image into here so I can show you the VideoPad options?

To upload a screenshot here, when you open a 'post a reply' page, click on the Upload Attachment tab below the text window: see image below. You browse to the image and click the 'Add the file' button. THEN click the PLACE INLINE button and the attachment is placed at the cursor position

Hi Jim

You should be able to add a VSP project file to the library or timeline provided it is not nested.

Ok try a few tests
Create a new project using the libraries samples and save it call it “project 1”
Now start a new project to clear the timelines

Right click the timeline and insert video, choose the Project 1.vsp
You can do the same in the library.

Create a second project using the libraries samples, then add the project 1 to the timeline
save the project as Project 2
Your project 2 is nested having project 1 inserted.

start a new project to clear the timelines and try to insert Project 2 to the timeline or library you will get an error

If your projects are nested, then you will get an error.
Check the content of your original project.
Open the project in the normal manner , change Preferences to Display Mode File names only.
View the names of the clips used are there any VSP files.
If yes then you are nesting your projects

Well.................. I just tried what you suggested and it worked :-)

Color me embarrassed... and grateful for your patience -- good news!

I can't imagine how a nested project file got into my video, but I'll check, carefully. It is big and complicated.

Thank you very much!

so............. I've been working on that project and I discovered something.
It seems what was making me unable to bring those project files onto the timeline wasn't nested projects after all.
I discovered some links were messed up, and when I fixed those the project file came in fine,
so another piece of info for the board.

You got me going in the right direction :-)

Hi Jim

I guess if you wish to nest (adding a VSP to the timeline) , or add a VSP to the library you should open the vip first, then any broken links will show up as the program will request a re-link.
However if you do happen to have a nested Project then the inserted VSP’s content is effectively hidden, and if that is broken there will be no re-link, the program will however throw out an error.

Nesting can get complicated, Although the process does seem to work I do not think Corel documents the procedure.
Certainly I do not use it but render the projects to a video file to add to other projects.

You say you do not use nesting, so why add VSP to the library?
These VSP’s then look like any other clip and can easily be dragged to the timeline, now you are nesting.

At least you are sorted, well done.
