Corel Guide problems

Post by BrandiH »

I can't open the Corel Guide on PS5. I get this screen when I try.

The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

I would like to download some of the frames and things but can't get to there to do that. I have windows 7 and I do have the firewall on that set to allow this program. I also have Avast but can't find anything on there to check for firewall problems.

It would seem your PSPX5 has a problem and I would suggest you reinstall and do a repair.

Tried that. I wasn't the one that org. installed the program on the computer so I don't know if this was a problem when it was first installed. I get the same type of screen for the license agreement. So I'm thinking it isn't so much PaintShop but something on my computer that isn't agreeing with Paintshop x5. I had no problems with x3 or x4 when I put them on this computer.

No ideas what it could be? Uninstalling and repairing didn't work.

I talked to a couple computer people and they agreed it is a Corel problem not my computer. Now what? Starting to wish I would have just swung the money for Photoshop.

Judging from that error I'm guessing you're installing from a CD yes?

While it probably is Corel's problem, I don't think they designed their own web browser that is incapable of reading their own files. Looks like a standard message in IE which probably means they're using the basic WebBrowser control.

In which case I'd make sure you have the latest versions of MSXML and IE installed on your computer that you are able to. I have MSXML 4.0 SP2 and SP3. The latest version being MSXML 6. So those should work for you just fine.

To see what version of MSXML you have installed, you can just open your control panel, click on "Uninstall a Program" and search through the list. You should be able to see a list of installed MSXML parsers.

IF those are all up to date, then you'll have to call Corel. Yes it's $19, but it's for dedicated support. They should be able to help narrow down the issue.
Buy the support ticket, they give you a number, you call, they drag you through a few "steps" before arriving at the solution. You're done.....maybe.

Thanks.
I am using a CD
It says I have MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB954430) and MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB973688)
I don't use IE, I use Firefox so I'll have to check on that one. I think I'm to the point that I would rather put the $19 towards Photoshop. I have been using Corel for a number of years now and I always liked it.
I think the IE is 8.

I'm having the following issue first initiated with the Corel Guide.
I have just installed X5 (downloaded twice reinstalled 4 times.) and when I opened the program the first time, Corel Guide offered a set of additional features (Brushes, Patterns, Textures etc.). So I downloaded them but they never installed. Now whenever I close X5 I get a nag screen telling me to download these features. And when I click the download button, I instantly get an Install now button the nag screen just disappears and nothing else happens.
At some point during installation, a folder named Paint Shop Pro was created in My Documents. That folder included a subdirectory named 15.0 and under that is a list of folders, Brushes, Bitmaps and so on. But they are all empty.
In X5's Preferences ->File locations there is a Save To field which points to the folder in My Documents mentioned above. Nothing I have done so far has allowed me to access these features which by the way were automatically installed with the previous version of PSP that I have used.

This does not compute??!! You would pay at least $200+ for Photoshop because of the extra frames, brushes, etc from the Corel Guide - you value those items so much?
So you have worked with X3 and X4 with no problems. Any problems with X5 apart from Guide access? The extra frames, tubes etc that you are after came with X4 basic download so you may be able to transfer those items from X4 to X5 and save yourself $200+. (just checked and the extras from X5 once downloaded and installed make it identical with X4 basics.)
I must say that I have X4 , X5 running on a Windows 7 laptop with no problems running the Corel Guide in either.

@ricksper - Those folders in your My Documents folder are for your own personal use. So any brushes, textures, maps, gradients, swatches, shapes, etc, that you create will be saved to these locations.

The ones that download and install from the Corel Guide are placed inside PSP's Program Folder. The downloaded installers, however, are placed inside your ProgramData folder. This folder is a hidden folder on your harddrive but you can easily get to it by opening up Windows Explorer (not the Browser Internet Explorer, but the folder view just have to throw that in there) and typing this into the address bar:

c:\ProgramData\Corel\Downloads

That will take you to the downloaded installers, assuming they did properly download. You can also delete those folders for Downloads and Messages and hopefully that will remove your nag screens.

@BrandiH, did this error on the agreement page prevent you from installing the software or were you just noting that a similar error happened? I don't think that was made clear.

If you're still within your 90 days of having bought the software you can make an installation or activation request free from Tech Support through your account on the Corel Website. That should remove any issue with money.

If not....then I really don't know what else to suggest. HartPaul is correct that you can just drag and drop the resources from older versions of PSP into X5. X5 only provided those as separate downloads to decrease the size of the initial download of the software. Though I'm honestly surprised they aren't available on the CD. I thought they would have been.

I can't tell you if the $19 is a good buy or not. The issue is odd, and if it can be fixed and you prefer PSP to Photoshop (I'm assuming you meant Elements not the full thing since it's closer in price to PSP) it could be worth it. Then again, if you don't prefer one over the other it could provide fewer headaches.

Of course there are people who can't use Photoshop or Elements because of their bugs on their systems, it's unavoidable it happens everywhere, but usually if you can't get one to work you will be able to get the other to work simply because they're different.

Best of luck with your choice. Sorry I can't be of any help.

It isn't just the extra frames and stuff. Photoshop has a lot of features PSP doesn't and I'm learning it has a better service when you do have problems. Customer service is important to me and Adobes is better. It isn't just the extra stuff to download, I can't use the Corel Guide at all.
The Photoshop I'm looking at is way more then that, but after using both and now this issue with little help from the company and how far I have grown with my photography I don't look at the cost as just the $ amount. It's in investment in my business.

Levifiction

I can install the software if I click on the agree to terms(which I can't read, guess I didn't read them! lol) I don't think I'm in the 90 days. It sat here on the desk for awhile because I didn't have time to install it. I just worked with x4 until the studio remodel was done and I had time to install and figured it out. It isn't so much the issue with money but that I hate it when you can't get any real type of help unless you pay the company or go to a forum like this. You guys aren't getting paid from them and clearly they don't care if their customers have problems unless the customers are willing to pay.

Not elements, I was looking at Photoshop cs6 but I'm not set on changed just yet. I think the cs6 is better but it's apples and oranges when compared to PSP. I haven't used Elements so I don't know how it compares to PSP. The price is huge, tech support is better.......ya not set on what I'm doing. My show season is starting so I might just use it as is for right now until I have more time.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to try updating the IE and the other things to see if that helps.

@LeviFiction thanks for the clue. Actually I found the installers located here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Corel\Downloads\

Ran the executables and they were successfully installed.
Had at least 3 e-exchanges with support and they had progressed to the point where they were querying whether my Win XP had SP3 installed. Sheesh...
Again thanks.
