Volume control in VS X5 Pro

Post by Old_Friend »

Can you tell me why I'm having trouble with VSX5 Pro's "Sound Mixer?" It isn't working, and I don't know if my issue is one that has been reported already, or not. In my timeline (under 'voice track') I have an audio file which I separated from the main video file. The main video file is now 'muted' so that only my voice track plays the sounds. Note: I copied the same voice track and pasted 3 copies of it only to lengthen the overall playtime, but they are each on the same voice track.

The problem I'm having is that the volume adjustment settings don't work. After selecting the first segment on my voice track, I then move the slider up to maximum volume (from level 0 to 12), and then I right-click on it to save it as "default," but it ALWAYS jumps back to volume level zero (0)! It does the same thing even if I don't "right-click" and save it. The setting never stays where I want it to. What else can I do to increase the volume of the sounds on my 3 segments in my voice track, and have them stay at level 12? :?:

EDITED: Also, is there some way I can save/export my "voice track" to an external sound file and/or convert it into a different sound format? I haven't seen a way to do that.

First, the easy bit:
Also, is there some way I can save/export my "voice track" to an external sound file and/or convert it into a different sound format?
If you look at the middle right of the Share screen -- where you normally select Create Video File or Create Disc, you will see in between them 'Create Sound File'. That will give you also a limited range of audio formats to choose from apart from .wav.

AS for your main question, I have to say I don't really use the audio mixer built into VS. I prefer to use a third party editor, mostly the freeware Audacity these days.

But I see the same thing when I right click on a volume on the mixer higher than 0. It immediately jumps back to 0. However, if I do have to vary the volume in my voiceover track from within VS, I do it in one of two ways, neither of which has anything to do with the mixer. My most used method is to use rubber banding -- though I acknowledge that takes some getting used to.

The other method is simply to highlight the audio track in question. Then if you look to the immediate right of the bottom right hand corner of the preview screen, you will see that Music and Voice tab has opened. It has a little clock to say how long the track is, and to its immediate right a little speaker icon set by default to 100. If you change the number upwards, it will increase your volume on that voice track.

Thanks Ken. I also have 3rd-party 'sound' programs. I use NCH's 3 products:
(they work seamlessly between each other, which is really handy)
* WavePad Sound Editor (Master's Edition)
* MixPad Audio Mixer (Mult-track Recorder/Mixer)
* SoundTap Streaming Audio Recorder.

I was experimenting and found an additional way to adjust volume level. Here's a picture of that control:
Edited: It's located just to the right of the object you named. I never noticed it before your comments.

Thanks again, Ken, for all your help!
