Using X5 Ultimate
Using the Edit function tab, and with several clips in the timeline, selecting one, then choosing clip mode and playing the clip in the view panel happily provides the clip embedded sound too. But occasionally, it doesn't.
Generally after doing something related, eg today, I was recording a voiceover file to go with a clip, and when finished I just played the clip in clip mode - and just got images, but not the sound which is embedded in the clip (don't expect to hear the voiceover in that configuration).
When it happens, I can get the sound embedded in the clip back by:
- choosing project mode, then playing the clip section; or
- changing the function tab to share, then back to edit, and then playing the clip; or
- saving the project file, closing X5 and then reopening both X5 and the same project file, and playing the clip.
Like, the control(s) that manage clip sound in the clip mode, play, seem to get "lost" during some edit functions and require a serious elbow jog to get back together.
Other than the empirical fixit methods I have discovered, does anyone know:
- what causes this?
- is there a control setting that prevents it happening in the first place?

Re: Clip sound temporarily gone
Hi David
Very strange for this too happen, I usually notice it after inserting a filter from the FX library, clicking the top icon to switch to the video library panel usually plays the audio ok. I have just go used to hitting that icon before playing.
Not sure if it is related to certain video types or whether all are affected

Hi Trevor,
I'm mildly relieved that this seems to be affecting more than just me. And clearly it's not a 'kill now' condition, so a . . . bug?? Perhaps, one of those that meets the undocumented features criteria of software developers (condition: coding error, not detected in testing, effect: not disastrous, does something different).
