VSX2 repeatedly stalls when burning

Post by Mabbas »

I have a Dell Studio 540 desktop running Vista Home Premium. Burner is a PLDS DVD+-RW DH-16A6S ATA Device. I recently burnt 1hr35m mpg to double layered disc without any issue. I then used VSX2 to create DVD using slightly modified menu templates and 12 chapters. I felt the initial stall may have been a glitch so attempted again. The burn stopped once more at 99% complete as indicated in attached jpg.

Am I doing something wrong or am I expecting too much from the program.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike :(

Hi Mike

And welcome to the forums

Burning a standard DVD, there are two approaches that you can try.

1 / After completing your editing, Share Create Disc – DVD will open the Burner module containing your project displayed as a thumbnail on the timeline. The process will convert the project file to Mpeg2 prior to burning the disc. Some users do have problems with this approach.

2 / After completing the editing-Share Create Video File – DVD this will create the Mpeg2 file. If you have problems then it would point to the timeline content, corrupt clip etc.

Using the Mpeg2 to burn the disc
From a new project - Share Create disc—Add video file adding the mpeg2 file
The process should complete the burn without any further conversion of the video file.

I would ask you to burn the Iso file only, if this completes ok then the burner module and menu structure would appear ok.
This will save making those coasters. I use VLC Player to play the iso.

You do however mention modifying the 12 thumbnail menu template, if this is the problem then creating the ISO will also fail?
Can you tell us where you got the 12 menu.

I did at one time try burning Dual Layer disc without success, I reverted to standard single layer discs.

How long was the stall occurring before you manually aborted it? Sometimes, I find things don't appear to be working at what appears to be the very end of a process, but that going away for a while and giving the program more time often resolves the issue and the process completes itself (in its own time!)

Hi Ken
I let VS sleep on it overnight without any progress. I previously burnt a 1hr45m video to Dual Layer DVD including menu without any issue. I chose VSX2 a few years back when Movie Maker regularly froze on that same video. Unfortunately I only use the program each year to capture the annual family holiday and spend most of my time relearning.

Hi Trevor

Created the ISO which plays back perfectly through VLC player. Sent the ISO to my burner which went through the motions of burning (no error messages) however it reads as a Data disc in my DVD. I also tried playing it on my PS3 but with no success. It does however play through VLC player. I must be doing something wrong.

Hi Mike

You can burn an ISO to disc as a DVD but need the software.
Earlier versions of VS provided a VCL/DVD Disc Image Recorder.
Do you have VS10/9 etc

Later versions X5 now provide means of burning the ISO’s to DVD

Otherwise a third party software would do the trick.

The trial version of X5 should be capable of burning the ISO as a DVD

You mention PS3, don’t have that, but I know Ken saves his raw video HD to USB memory stick and plays them on the PS3, that saves on discs as well.
Maybe that’s something you can investigate
I am sure Ken will reply with further details.

Hi Trevor and Ken
3 coasters later and your advice has paid off (maybe I should have gone for a set of 4). Downloaded ImgBurn and successfully burnt ISO to DVD. Plays on all hardware. I burnt at x4 to play it safe and set output to DVDRom. Not sure why windows software failed to burn without providing an error message but am happy with the outcome. The pre-rendered video contained over 200 video files, 100 images, titles, transitions and a number of sound tracks. By far my most complex movie to date. I pre-rendered the video to get around the sound synching issue. My first effort ended up with a video lag of around 8 seconds by the end of the movie. I found by pre-rendering and then compiling the DVD from a single video file that I completely eliminated the lag.
Thank you once again for you help. Here's a screen capture of my modified menu's.
Regards
Mike

Hi

The attached zip contains a 12 Thumbnail menu.

The easiest is to copy the UFO to your favourites menu folder
The folder location is here for XP but may reside in another similar location within My Documents
C:\Documents and Settings\Trevor\My Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\12.0\Favorites\16x9\Favorites

Please note that the favourites folder is only created after Customising and saving an existing menu, do this when editing your menu. The option to save the template shows below the preview screen.

I doubt if you will re-do the disc but at least you will have the menu for future discs. Note, VS 9 was the last version to include a 12 menu structure.

I know Ken saves his raw video HD to USB memory stick and plays them on the PS3, that saves on discs as well.
Just a small gloss on that: I edit my HD projects, then output them either in their original HDV format, or in Blu-Ray mpeg-2 transport stream format or AVCHD mpeg-4 format. I transfer the new files to either a USB thumb drive (for a quick view) or for longer term storage to an external HDD. Then connect that via USB to the PS3. (Note that the HDD and thumb drive have to be formatted in FAT32 as the PS3 cannot "see" NTFS. The videos also have to be in a folder on the drive labelled VIDEO all in upper case.) But the PS# can then play all 3 formats natively.
