Question about subtitles

Post by salma »

Hi all,

I am not an expert movie editor so bare with me :D :)
I created subtitles for a video. Later I decided to add rolling titles in the beginning explaining what the video is about.
I was wondering if there is an easy way of shifting the subtitles that I already created to the right same amount as the rolling introductory titles without having to do it manually one subtitle frame at a time?
I tried to add a blank subtitle on the subtitle track same length as what I am adding on the video track but it won't let me expand it, i.e pushing the whole track to the right ...
Is there a way to link the video to the subtitles so they move together? or Do I have to save as a video and then reinsert after the new rolling titles?

Thanks,
Salma

Are you talking about just adding text (captions) on the text track or using a real sub-title file?

I have subtitles (the video is in a foreign language and I added English subtitles). I saved the subtitles to a file as well.
I want to add something to the video at the beginning. How do I make the subtitles move in time forward with the video without having to adjust each by hand?

You need to enable Ripple Edit by clicking the lock icon that is at the beginning of the main video track. Then click the lock icon that is at the beginning of the title track. Now when you insert a rolling credit at the beginning of the main track, the titles will move to the right by the same amount. If you have other tracks in use, you can click the lock on those as well so everything moves over the same amount when you insert clips on the main track.

Just if you aren't aware, the subtitles you place on the title tracks will be permanent, you can't turn them off. If you want the kind that you can turn on and off with a remote control, you need to save the title track to a subtitle file (.utf). There will be two options in the Options panel to load and save subtitles. If they aren't visible, just select a title on the title track and then click the blue Options button on the right end of the window. Then when you go create a DVD, (Share > Create Disc), you will load the subtitle file (.utf) back in there. Before going to create a disc, you will want to hide the subtitles on the title track on the timeline by clicking the "eye" icon at the beginning of the title track. Otherwise those permanent titles will be showing all the time.
