Do you have any DLA (Drive Letter Access) or packet writing software installed? If so, you may need to shut down or uninstall it, or it will take control of the drive and any blank media that is inserted before UVS can do the same.

If you do have such software installed and you cannot or do not want to shut it down / uninstall it, then use UVS to write an ISO image file instead of burning directly to disk, and use your CD/DVD burning software to burn the image.

Do you have any software installed that lets you treat a CD as a big floppy disk? Examples are Nero InCD and Roxio Drag-To-Disk.

It is possible to exit from Drag-To-Disk to remove it from memory and allow burning from UVS, but AFAIK, InCD has no such feature and must be uninstalled.

I think you've got way too many CD/DVD support programs installed. I'd uninstall it all, and then install just what you really need. I personally like Roxio's product because it can be shut down completely so it doesn't interfere with other programs trying to control the drive.

I simply use the packet writing software which comes as part of XP and find it more than sufficient to my purposes. I'd be interested to know, though, Torsten what the Roxio product does which the XP version doesn't, or what it does better (apart from the handy thing of being able to be turned off!!)

Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding!

You've hit the nail on the head. It can be shut down so it doesn't interfere with other programs that are trying to access the drive. I rarely use the rest of the package -- if anything, I use the "Creator Classic" to archive documents etc., usually to CDs, by using the Explorer-like interface to select files and then burning them.

And the XP packet writer only handles CDs, not DVDs. The workflow is also a bit odd for my taste -- you select files to be written to the CD from within Explorer, they are sent to a folder that acts as a holding place, and eventually they are written to the CD. For more information on burning CDs using XP, please see this page.
