only plays on pc

Post by pistolpete »

Hi,
I'm trying out DVD workshop express (following recommendation on DVDoctor.net web board), but having apparently successfully completed my first cut disc (the programme said so), it will only play back on my PC, and then only by accessing the .vob file. I have tried it in my Mac, which returns dialog "contains no files which Mac can read" and on my Xbox (which doubles as dvd player) which simply doesn't read anything.

All the appropriate files appear in the folder on the disc.

It was a v. simple job. Copy 3.30 min dvd and put on a menu/title page containing only the title, background image and play button.

Any suggestions pls?

Sony DW RW-U10A, XP Pro, PC line DVD+R discs

Thanks,

Pete

What were your project settings? Could possibly be bitrate-related. What were your input data? Unless you (and other forum users) tell us everything, we cannot really help you.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Pls be aware that I am a complete newby to this.
I'm not at my machine now, so can't check for info 'til this eve, but I changed no settings from the default installed settings (and I wasn't prompted to either), so the settings will be as set by the program - which I would assume to be correct for the job of authoring a dvd to play on dvd players (???) - especially as the program displays a "successful completion" dialog at the end.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi,
I've now checked, and I'm somewhat curious about Devil's original reply. Apart from selecting the quality level (I chose high) there are NO project settings which I can change. To what "input data" were you referring? I have said "copying DVD", what other info can be required?
If anyone else can help with a constructive suggestion I will be most grateful.
Thanks,
Pete

I'm sorry, but I was not aware there was a "Copy DVD" function in WS Express (I have the full WS2, where it is seemingly more complicated to bring in a DVD and, AFAIK, straight copying is not possible). The function generates an .mpg file which is part of the "edit" screen before "menu".

The obvious questions involve regional and copy protection. Also, what is the audio wrt standard? If it is NTSC, you may have some problems with MPEG sound or, with PAL, AC-3, depending on the software. There are many possible causes of problems.

Sorry.

Did you add the menu/title page containing only the title, background image and play button :?:

If so, then this was not a straight copy operation. So the question is did you import a video from an existing valid dvd structure into DVD WS? Or was the source video just an mpeg video that someone burned to disc to have you add the menu/button? What are the attributes of your source video?

And what are the attributes of your project settings? What Template do you have selected? And can you tell if DVD WS is re-encoding your source video, or is it using it "as is"? In the EDIT step, under the VIDEO tab there will be a checkbox that says "Convert to disc template" -- is that box open, or is it greyed out?

What files are on that DVD you created? Can you list the entire contents of the Folders and Files on your DVD Disc?

Also, how much space does it take up, and on the Final/Burn Step, did you have a check or leave blank the box that says "do not close" :?:

Lastly, it could just be the media you used -- some players will not play certain brands or types of discs (try different combinations of ±R/RW discs -- sometimes even within a type, only certain brands will work, while others will not)
Look here for your DVD Player's compatibility:
