There's really not enough information here, but I suspect that the USB connection doesn't permit the use of the camcorder's full DV resolution during transfer -- it most likely transferred the video at webcam (320x200 or similar) resolution, whereas DV normally is 720x480 or 720x576, depending on your local TV broadcast standard.

In addition to that, field order may be reversed as well. What were your project settings?

With all these new camcorders coming out with USB connectivity
they are writing drivers to handle the video using USB-2 spec.

Some camcorders are transferring/streaming Mpeg4 video.
And it depends on what mode the camcorder is in, either card or video.

The Canon Optura60 and other similar canon camcorders come with
USB drivers for video.
Before connecting the camcorder you install the drivers.
1 Driver for USB video control (to control the camcorder).
1 Driver for the video.
After you install the drivers then plug the camcorder into the computer.
Windows XP then recognizes it and will show up under "My Computer" etc
as a camcorder.

Using VideoStudio 9 and choosing the "Ulead Direct Show" capture driver
you then capture exactly the same as firewire, Dv.avi Type1.

I've done it, captured full 720x480 Type1 dv.avi file without problems.

What didn't work was changing the capture plug-in and trying to
capture Mpeg2 format.
Received the generic windows error and program closed.
Using the same camcorder capturing mpeg2 via "Firewire" works.
(Do Not connect USB and Firewire cables to the computer at the sametime).

I still prefer firewire but for someone without a firewire port on their
machine it's possible to capture via USB now with the newer model camcorders.

The Canon instructions state that the USB Video Driver will only work
for "Windows XP sp1 or sp2", not Windows2000 or earlier versions.

Hope this helps,

MD

Sorry guys -- I should perhaps have cut this short some time ago. Janette contacted me direct by e-mail with further details. She has a JVC GR DX67 EK which, as far as I can find, has Firewire and USB 1.0 Though she has not yet confirmed it, I suspect her computer does not have a Firewire port and so, connecting by USB cable, she is only getting webcam quality. I have suggested she get a shop to look at her computer with a view to installing a Firewire card.
