Audio Sync and Video Jitters

Audio Sync and Video Jitters
I was experiencing both audio and video problems.
I read here that ATI products do not always work reliably with Ulead software. I spent many hours installing different ATI Display/Capture drivers and testing, mostly without success. ATI Display driver version 3.8 and MMC 8.8 did seem to be the best match.
I have UVS8.01 installed which would not work with my ATI hardware so I was capturing with the ATI MMC and editing and burning with UVS8. Seemed to work OK!
I then happened on the posting about the poor documentation and implementation of updates by Ulead.
After reading about the update problem I went back to a fresh install of UVS8.00, making sure all Ulead folders were erased before trying to reinstall a fresh copy. I then saved the files in the “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD” folder to a backup folder. I then installed the 8.01 update and then copied the files from my backup folder back into the original DVD folder overwriting the new files.
It all works now!
I could not make the capture work with version 8.00 or with the 8.01 update. Both would produce an end product with bad jitters! I also discovered the audio was OK as long as I did not edit the clip. As soon as I edited a clip I found the audio was now out of sync on long projects.
I was very close to giving up on UVS8 when I tried the fix outlined above.
I was actually looking for a solution to the audio synchronization problem but to my surprise, it fixed both audio sync and video jitter problems.
I have also re-installed ATI Display/Capture drivers version 4.10 and MMC 9.02 which works great!

RJ,
I have been very concerned about the persistent Video/Audio sync problem.
I was hoping to be able to reproduce your success with a project that has shown a chronic one second gap between audio and video when viewed on DVD or on a dvd.iso disk image file. (The project video file plays with perfect lip sync.)
My Project properties are:
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 224 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo
Unfortunately, when I regressed the Common Files\...\DVD folder back to its 8.00 state (after applying the 8.01 update) the V/A gap remained but was shortened to about 1/2 second. However, the file was unplayable in WMP 9 (when the .iso suffix was changed to mpg).
BTW, my analog projects still have perfect lip sync with the up-to-date Common Files\...\DVD folder. The only property difference is the Field Order (Upper Field First).

Have you tried regressing your “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD” folder to the level in this post?
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... light=#795
It fixed my audio sync problems!

I agree about Ulead and did report this problem a few weeks back.
Their response was that they are aware of the problem and it would (hopefully) be fixed in the next patch. Since then, the DST patch came out with no mention of this problem so I did not install it fearing the patch would break something I already had working!
Have you tried creating VOB's instead of a .ISO image?
I capture to MPEG-2 (using CapWiz), edit and create new MPEG-2's for each part of my project (with transitions etc.) and then include these edited MPEG's in a new project to add menu's, etc.
Finally, I output to a Video_TS file on my hard drive.
My original MPEG's never get rendered using this approach (only the transitions are rendered) as I am careful to match the properties to my original MPEG-2 properties throughout.
I can also check the intermediate MPEG's and the VOB files with WMP to make sure all is OK before actually burning anything with NERO.
In my case, tha audio sync error is introduced in the final VOB-file creation process. Regressing to the files mentioned above seems to have fixed my problem though (if you can call that a fix?).

I also capture direct to Mpeg and so my videos have not been converted at all. However, my project video file has perfect lip sync, so its hard to blame anything other than the last Video/Audio Multiplexing phase that produces the dvd.iso file.
I have not made a VOB other than the one that is made prior to the dvd.iso.

can i make a suggestion here.
i originally used to be able to capture in VS7 without any synch problems. i captured as direct MPG2 with MPG Audio.
On the upgrade to VS8 it went pearshaped!
To get around this I did the following
1) captured as PCM Audio
2) convert this to AC3 in DVDWS2
this seems to fix the problem as well as saving on valuable space.
I have also noted that capture as MPG audio converting back to PCM and then converting back to MPG had no effect. This was suggested on the old webboard. (ie split audio etc...)
Also i noted if i capture as MPG with MPG Audio it is perfectly in synch during editing and final movie file but only on the DVD in VS8 and DVDWS2 is out totally out.
I tend to capture now as DV.AVI to save on any problems of synch. I aint convinced of the merits direct MPG2 capture ie picture quality isnt that good exspecially if using VBR. I know it is long winded but it works for me.

David,

I observe the same thing - but only on digital video: perfect lip sync during edit, video file - but screwed up on DVD or dvd.iso file. But my analog captures to Mpeg2 have perfect lip sync in project, video file, and DVD.
We all need to bombard Ulead Tech Support with messages of serious concern about this problem because it is affecting a large segment of our user population.

It should be noted that VStudio and DVDWS2, and all the rest of the Ulead family, use the same common DLL files in the "common files\DVD" folder. DVDWS2 does exactly what VS8 does, Audio Sync Problems, at least on my system!!
I agree that this problem is affecting many users and it is also apparent that it is affecting us in slightly different ways. What fixes the problem for me does not for someone else.
I capture MPEG with LPCM audio and then convert to AC-3 audio during the Create Video File phase. At this point all is OK!
All of my problems appear to have come from the CD/DVD Burn Engine. My projects play OK on the computer and when output to a TV using Video output!
The video jitters and audio sync problems seem to be introduced during the “Video/Audio Multiplexing” and burn phase.
It does appear, at least for the time being, that regressing to an earlier version of the DLL’s has solved my audio sync problem.
This however is not a true fix since I discovered that a project which was not touched with edit software created perfect “in sync” DVD’s using the most up to date DLL’s, so the problem does not just lie in the Burn Engine!
I do know ULEAD needs better organization and implementation of the software updates. I am a Computer Engineer and I am uneasy running Version 8.01 software with Version 8.00 or earlier DLL’s. Might fix the jitters but it has probably messed up something else!
I have a question, does ULEAD monitor this forum to see what is going on with its product?
Just some food for thought!
Rhonda

RJ,
I am amazed that Video Studio runs at all, with all the combinations of dlls and their versions that are possible given the loose release process of their Burning Engine "updates."
A few days ago I completely uninstalled Video Studio and then, starting from the CD of VS8.00, I applied each update in release date order. At each stage, I took an analog project and a digital project through the stages of Create Video File followed by Create Disk to dvd.iso file and checked the V/A sync. Here are some results:
Pure VS8.00: Analog project video file showed 3 sec audio lag when played in Video Studio. Video skipped and stuttered in WMP9. Digital Project showed 1 second audio lead over video. WMP would not play the dvd.iso file
VS8.00 + 3617239.zip Burning engine update: Same results. WMP was able to play video but without audio.
Installed First VS8.01 update (dated 8/24/04): Dvd.iso no longer skips in WMP. Analog video file showed slight A/V problem but dvd iso was perfect and one second off in digital project.
Then 3617246.zip was applied: no change in A/V sync.
Now, I applied the "second" release of the 8.01 update dated 9/6/04. This contains a lot more stuff than the first release, particularly Burning Engine dlls. This update does NOT regress the dlls because it is applied with an install program that checks versions before overwriting. This results in NO change the A/V sync problem.
Final results: Analog project has perfect lip sync. Digital project has audio with 1 second lead over video.
What can we conclude from this experiment? Not much, except that Ulead has become careless about updates by changing the content of a release file without changing its name and without warning the users. Also, they are using zip files to implement updates to the same dlls, which may overwrite newer versions if applied in wrong order.
