Image file overwritten, lost

Post by pmlucas »

While evaluating a few "Instant Effects", the orginal image file was overwritten with one of the altered images. The original image file, which I need, cannot be found.
I did not "Save" the altered image.
Autosave is turned off.
This behaviour makes the program unsafe to use.

As we told them during the beta. It's technically only dangerous in the manage mode as the same palette in Edit mode won't auto-save the change. It should, however, have asked if you want to keep the originals just in case. If you said, Yes then good news they are still there.

PSP hides preserved originals. Just turn on hidden files and folders, and the a in the auto-preserve folder should be visible in the same folder as your file.

Your other option, assuming it's on, is built into Windows. Right-click on the file and select "Restore Previous Versions."

Thanks for taking a stab at this, LeviFiction. But it looks like PSP thoroughly and unceremoniously eliminated my original image.
I was indeed in the "Manage" mode. I used an "Instant Effect" to briefly see how it would look. As I tried to Undo the effect, I unintentionally closed the "Instant Effects" palette. I then discovered that there was no Undo option anywhere. My original image file was gone and was replaced by the altered image. Essentially an unrequested "Save" had been executed. No confirmation window.
There is no auto preserve folder (hidden or otherwise).
There is no "Restore Previous Versions" option.
I did a system-wide search for any file with the original name as part of the file name. Nothing.

Sure glad that I have PSP on a trial basis. The program sure appears to endanger my portfolio.

Hmmm....I thought Windows 7 usually had that option on by default. Darn.

Here's a FAQ about Shadow Volume Copy that keeps previous versions of your files. Best to get it turned on in Windows to help deal with any future such issues, really good for all kinds of files.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... -questions

Next inside PSP go to your Preferences -> General Program Preferences

Under Auto-Preserve make sure that is turned on it'll save any originals to a hidden folder before overwriting them.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I came across that feature some time back when taking a look at Manage mode and its special effects and sure enough my file ha been written over. However as a matter of precaution and because external hard drives are so cheap nowdays I was able to recover that file from one of my three back ups.

Usually when I experiment I open a test folder on my desktop and copy files to there and then work from that one, never from a one and only original. Blackouts while saving, failed sectors and Murphy's Law taught me that long ago.
