Can NVIDIA GTX 660 work with Videostudio cuda render feature

Post by dan »

Can a NVIDIA GTX 660 work with Corel Videostudio Pro X5 cuda rendering features?

I have a core 2 duo processor, and I do not have enough money to upgrade to an intel i7, so I am looking other ways to improve rendering times. As rendering time, I mean the time that it takes to convert the video edition project to a video file. You may call this "encode".

I think that the videostudio cuda features include rendering, encoding, and file conversion; is this true? My main objective is to decrease the rendering time of a video.

Also I have read here that for some people using some GTX cards, the hardware acceleration feature is disabled, even if the card features CUDA. Why does this happen? Is this feature something that is limited to the Nvidia Quadro cards? Because I know that those are almost the same, except that they enable more features on them (and disable them on the GTX cards) to sell them more expensive. Is this one of those limited features?

I was thinking in getting the nvidia gtx 660 for that purpose, but if it is not going to work, then I do not get it. The other option is the nvidia Quadro 600, which has a similar price, but it has less speed, less memory, and less cuda cores; obviously I want more speed, more memory, and more cuda cores, as my objective is to increase the rendering speed, without needing to change the processor.

With the intel core 2 duo processor I currently render 30 minutes of AVCHD 1920x1080i 16000kbps footage, with video filters (contrast improvement, film look, noise reduction) and transitions, in 120 to 180 minutes (2 to 3 hours). That is 4 to 6 hours of rendering time, per each hour of video. It is inefficient and very limiting.

I have read that the cuda processing improves times at least 50% and up to 10 times faster, so I would get 1 hour of video in 24 minutes of rendering time. I think this might be exaggerated, but I hope that you can give me a better idea of what to expect. I hope that the time be improved by 50% at least.

Thank you for your help.

Might not help much, depending on how the program is using the GPU. It accelerates encoding/decoding, but it may not be using the GPU much for all the other stuff involved in rendering (such as effects applied etc).
