To create a Transparent background when creating a new image: select File, New Image, Canvas, check Transparent, click OK, you have a new image with a transparent background.

Select your bird image, then drag and drop into the new transparent image.

I'm really new to this forum but have use PI for couple of years. but that explaination opened up a new vista. I had wondered about that, but had not needed to use. That made it easy. Great. thanks..

I have also noticed that using a white background may not always look the best if you want to import your image onto another or use it as an overlay in VS, try changing the color to a light blue or green so that once you import the image you won't see a white line anywhere around the image.

To remove the white line around an object while cutting and pasting you might try the following:

Object Menu, Defringe

Blends the object's edges with the background by removing unnecessary pixels. The effect renders redundant pixels to transparent, thus obtaining a seamless blend between the object and the base image.

Defringe dialog box

Preview Window Tab
Select the type of view to use while working in the dialog box.
Color Picker
Picks the original background color that will be used when applying Defringe.
Depth
Determines the strength of the effect by setting the number of object edge pixels that will be affected.
Tolerance
Sets the level of similarity between the object and the original background color.

In addition you might clean up the Object with the following:

Edge Preserving Blur

Applies a blur effect to an image while preserving the sharpness of its outline.

Edge Preserving Blur dialog box

Preview Window Tab
Select the type of view to use while working in the dialog box.
Edge preservation
Sets the level of preservation applied to the image outline. A higher value yields a clearer outline of the image.
Radius
Controls the degree of blur effect. The higher the value, the wider the blur effect.
Strength
Controls the extent to which blurring affects the object's neighboring pixels.
