I just purchased VideoStudio X5 Ultimate for the sole purpose of transfering and editing all my families old VHS tapes of important events.
I need to put these on DVD or Blu-Ray discs.
The install went fine and the program starts up. When I insert my capture device, a Sabrent USB-avcpt unit, I get an error "Open driver failed. Cannot create the video capture filter" However, the screen shows that it does see the device.
I went through all the usual steps, removing the drivers for the device, uninstalling VSX5, re-installing drives and VSX5, etc., etc..
Same error. I knew it was something in VS because my other programs has no problem with the device.
I purchased another device, a Diamond One-Touch Capture and installed that one. Now VS sees the device but does not show video.
I have determined the problem lies strictly in VideoStudio X5 as both devices work perfectly in my other programs such as Power Director 9, EZ-Grabber, and a couple of free programs.
I have tried uninstalling all of the other programs and re-installing only VideoStudio, however it still refuses to see one of my devices and doesn't show video on the other.
System is Win7 64, Sabertooth X79, i7 3930, 32Gig Ram, 12TB hard drive space.
I even tried installing it on another system I have and it does the exact same thing. That one is also Win7 64, Maximus X58, 12Gig Ram, 6TB of HD space.
I even went so far as to reinstall windows on that second system and only installed VideoStudio X5. Same problems. However when I install the other programs, both devices work perfectly.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Re: Video Capture Devices Not Working
I am sorry that I do not have a solution to the basic problem but in such cases an easy workaround is to use whatever other programme you have on your computer that does transfer - or better still whatever came with the capture device and use that to transfer the videos to a folder on your computer.
Once on your computer you can use the basic VideoStudio "Import media" command to add them to VideoStudio for editing and final DVD burn.

Thank you Brian. I understand that I could do that with my cheaper programs however all that is to me is a band-aid.BrianCee wrote:I am sorry that I do not have a solution to the basic problem but in such cases an easy workaround is to use whatever other programme you have on your computer that does transfer - or better still whatever came with the capture device and use that to transfer the videos to a folder on your computer.

Anyone would expect and require that a program they purchased for a lot of money to be fully working and not have to resort to using a cheap one to accomplish a simple task.
That is almost like saying to perform a certain edit of a document in Word, I first must use Notepad to do the edits and then load it into Word.
Since part of the function of VS is to capture video, I would expect it to work with any capture device. I wouldn't expect it to work with all cameras but this is just a run-of-the-mill USB device. They have been around for years and years. Even the cheap or free programs work just fine with the devices.
This to me is just a basic functionallity that should be working. It's not like I am trying to do some serious editing, I just want to be able to capture video with the program and spruce it up a bit.
I have contacted support twice with their web support and have not heard a peep from them.

Re: Video Capture Devices Not Working
I have not received any responses from my requests for help from the company.
Three times I asked on their support line but no responses.
The only the response was from this forum and although was greatly appreciated, does not solve the basic issue.
I have no option except to return the product for a full refund.
What a real shame. I had high hopes for this product and even purchase a companion book with tutorials which I am also returning.
No need for it now since I will just upgrade my other software.

Re: Video Capture Devices Not Working
I suggest you do as Brian advises. You need to get your VHS into your computer first. If you can do that AND play it back on the computer, you can burn a direct DVD using a program like Nero. If you want to edit the VHS footage then you should be able to load it into VideoStudio.
There is nothing wrong with VS provided you present the raw video in a form it understands!!! In cases like this it is often easier to do the transfer in steps.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Re: Video Capture Devices Not Working
While I understand -- and sympathise with -- your thought that a software package should perform as advertised and do everything necessary to start and finish a project, the reality is that many of us here use a variety of programs to achieve that outcome. For instance, I use WinDV or HDVSplit to do most of my capturing, even though VS can do it. I use Xara 3D, Motion Studio 3D and BluffTitler for my titles, Heroglyph and NewBlue filters, Sonic Fire Pro for my music backgrounds, Audacity for other audio editing, and often Nero for actually burning a disc. Yet I think nothing of this mix and match approach, because the end result is what I am interested in.
