Hi. I currently own Videostudio x4 (upgraded from x3), which I love... or used to love until I found that one of the issues I was having with my machine is that I had a service running in the background called Protexis, which is installed with almost every Corel product.
After I upgraded my OS, I started to reinstall all the software, but haven't done that yet with Corel Videostudio as I don't want unrequested services running in the background (checking my Corel license). Maybe for most of people this isn't an issue, but for me it is a big one. So I'd like to know if x5 also installs and runs Protexis in the background (or if anyone knows if x6 will), to consider if to upgrade or move along to seek for other options.
Thanks a lot.

There are lots of services installed by different programs without you being asked.
If you don't want the Protexis service running then don't install Corel software. Why are you objecting to a program checking to see whether your license is valid?
VX X5 and MotionSTudio will not run without it. You will have to ask Corel if it installs for X6 whenever that comes out
PaintShop Pro X5 does not seem to require it

Yes, I know that, and I try to avoid them when these services have nothing to do with the functionalities of the software I bought.canuck wrote:There are lots of services installed by different programs without you being asked.
Because I hate background services that are running for the unique reason to check if I'm a thief or not. I paid for the software, I have a serial number (well I have two, one for x3 and another for x4), and I think that should be enough. I can understand that at Corel they have another point of view on this issue and feel they need additional confirmation, but I don't agree with it if that means that I have to have a process running constantly in the background, even when I'm not running their software. If you don't want the Protexis service running then don't install Corel software. A quick Internet search for VideoStudio can prove that the Protexis protection service can't avoid piracy, and a quick forum search for the word Protexis can prove that the service doesn't come without issues for us, legal customers that paid for the software.
Thanks. I'll contact them.VX X5 and MotionSTudio will not run without it. You will have to ask Corel if it installs for X6 whenever that comes out
