screen capture not working

Post by MartinH »

Hi, I am using X5 with win XP, I can select an area for screen capture but the record button is greyed out, nor will the f11 button start a recording. Anyone had this problem please, or can tell me what is wrong? Thanks, Martin.

Are you trying to capture video or an image? what exactly are you using to do a screen capture? it does not sound to me that you are using VS to screen capture an image.

Hi Kenneth, Thank you for your reply. I was just testing the feature, firstly by trying to record a tv programme from my TV card, but if I try and make a screenshot of any window or fullscreen or highlight an image from the browser the result is the same. The only format offered in the menu is wmv so it ought to record video? Cheers, Martin.

I have not done what you are attempting but have you
Selected the appropriate option from the Source drop down selection.
“ options-Video Properties and adjusted settings as required in the dialogue box
Chosen the options in the tuner info tab
Chosen the channel number in the channel box

Tried a forum search, you may have to fine tune your search phrase

Sorry Kenneth - you lost me, my screen capture control panel looks like the image below - where are the controls you are referring to

Martin - despite appearances and references in the programme I have never found that F11 actually starts recording - it WILL resume after a pause but not actually start it.

The record button which is the one with red blob in the centre never seems to actually change colour until you actually mouse over it when it brightens a little - sorry if I'm being condescending - but have you actually clicked on it ?

Ah - that procedure is to actually transfer TV programmes from the TV tuner to your hard drive - similar to transferring from a camcorder except the source is a TV card.

Martin is trying to use the SCREEN capture in X5 which allows you to make a video of any part of the screen in whatever programme you have open - not necessarily VideoStudio - what he is trying to do should be possible

OK, sorry about the confusion, this all sounds very interesting, I will definitely persue this aspect of VS.

Hi Guys, Thanks for helping. I have clicked on the red button, but it is pretty much greyed out and nothing gets recorded, the C:\record folder is completely empty. Cheers, Martin.

I have had a look at the screen capture feature and may I now offer some suggestions
re Martin’s original issues
Have you
1 Ticked “enable F10/f11 shortcut key” at the bottom of the expanded screen capture tool bar. F11 will not work to start recording otherwise
2 Have you selected the appropriate option via the drop down arrow to the right of
The (default) “Fullscreen” field. There is a choice of an active “Application” or
“ Custom” here.
3 Under Custom-Freehand Selection(arrow in a dotted box) you can drag a capture area
box with the mouse.
4 have you configured all the other options in the Toolbar

Under “System Audio , for this to be enabled it will only be supported in Windows 7 and Vista. When an XP user clicks disable system audio he will be advised that no audio is detected and to make sure this is enabled.I wonder if this is anything to do with having only wmv as a choice of format.

Hi Kenneth, I've tried it all the ways you mention without success. I also noticed the disable audio message and was wondering if screen capture works at all under XP? Not sure if I've configured all the options in the toolbar, I may have missed something there, can you point me in the right direction? Thanks, Martin.

I am using XP and a selected area of a screen capture worked 1st time for me.After clicking settings the toolbar expands and there are the following fields to fill in.
Filename – enter a name for your file here
Save to- I have made a folder for this purpose outside video studio. Click on the folder icon to browse for this folder on your hard drive.Your video file will then be saved in it.
Tick capture to library-Your video file will will import to the default Samples library unless you select one of your projects via the drop down arrow or a new folder opened via the + sign.
Here is my workflow for a screen capture of a selected area.
Open item to be recorded
In VS- Capture –Screen Capture
Drag Screen Capture Toolbox out of way of area to be captured
Select Custom-Freestyle Selection-It highlights
Drag out area
Click Start button
F10 to stop
File imports to Library

There is no need to actually drag the tool bar out of the way - once you click record it minimises itself.

Hi Kenneth, Thanks, I've done all that, I've even managed to highlight an area using the freestyle tool, but the record button remains resolutely dull and unresponsive. I'm glad to know that it can work with XP, that gives me hope. What to do? Uninstall/reinstall? Cheers, Martin.
