conversion from flv to format suitable for UVS10

Post by pedro26 »

Dear all,

Some more re-tracing of old ground. I used to have a method to do high quality (lossless?) conversion from flv files to a format which UVS 10+ could accept, but I have totally forgot how to do this.

Been trying all day to do this without success (downloading all sorts of useless freebies), tried x-media recode, a freeware prog that appears very versatile, but I tried a couple of output formats, but UVS either gives me a message that the file is inaccessible, or an incompatible format.

I'm trying not to degrade the flv files.

Can anyone advise on suitable settings that would produce a quality video file in a format accpetable to uvs 10+ from tese flv files?

Thanks

One free program that I use to make flv conversion to other formats is "Freemake" (www.freemake.com). It does an excellent job converting to almost every type of format and I have never had a problem importing the output into any video editor. Since UVS10 is an "older" program it will not recognize some of the newer, high quality formats.

flv is of course very highly compressed and you will not get any better quality then your source quality.

Ken,

I think I mean flv, these are the type of video files that youtube etc. produces, flash video. The vid files are not from Youtube though.

I tried re-coding to MPEG4, (mp4), no joy, but in the X-media re-code there are many variables that I now understand within a file extension 'wrapper' are not constant, but are in fact 'under the hood' variables. So I could choose from a massive array of sound codecs etc. etc. (bit rate settings and so on).

[I suppose if you want to keep quality then there are a few key varaiables that you should know about the original clip so that you can match those settings in the converted clip. For the video and audio, what would they be ?]

In X-media recode you can also load up a target kit profile, e.g. psp3, iphone, i.e. a list of about 40 or 50. No idea if you still have tweak the other tabs to optimise the settings what is done in re-coding.

But I am getting ahead of myself, getting something suitable for UVS10+ to not only recognise but load up into the clip library is the first step.

Thanks

ps I did manage to convert (with one of the first freebies) to an acceptable format (highly degraded ) that I could load up into UVS10+, but the resulting clip was so poor quality that it was a waste of effort.

Re free-make

The flv files are being compressed and de-compressed (using some codec or other) very well to watch in any of the standard media players. You can make it full screen and its ok.

I guess you need to de-compress optimally then re-encode in an acceptable format (to uvs1-0+) in at least as high quality as the original.

(Does the flv file have 'flags' in it to tell these players which codec to use ? Can those flags be interrogated to find out which codecs are needed ? Or are there generic codecs that work reasonably well for such files ?

When you use free-make do you let it run on auto-pilot, or do you have certain key settings that you have to check and set ? If so what are those key settings ?

Is there a listing for uvs10+ for the different 'flavours' of video files it will accept ? (i.e. not just the wrapper, because uvs10+ has the file extensions in its drop down list, but is still failing to load the clips into its library.

Does uvs+ rely on the computer having a large bank of codecs stored on the hard drive to accept even those media files for which it has the file extension in its drop down list ? So should I scour round and load up lots of codec packs (from where ?)

Thanks

What do you want to do with the converted file?

Any time you decompress and recompress you lose quality. Not all flv clips are good quality.

There are many setting combinations in Freemake. It all depends on what you want as your final format. Only you can decide what is acceptable to you.

Use a short flv clip and experiment.

Thanks,
Assuming that you want a "standard 4.7GB DVD" then you should select "mpg , best quality". You should then be able to load that file into UVS10

Canuk,

I found on another thread about trying to add the video and then looking at the properties, and it was because the video compression was not accessible. Loading it into the gspot software. it states that the coded is not installed mpg2 = FFmpeg MPEG 1/2

have tried installing the above codec, both from the author's site and elsewher, but if I have intalled it then it is still not appearing/working.

It seems quite difficult to get the different codecs without laying your computer open to epople wanting to put adware and worse on to your Pc.

Any tips

Where did you get the flv files? Can you provide a link or upload it to a free website from which it can be downloaded?

Canuk,

These are the vids captured in flv format, with Justin's I tried all three of the formats offered by the capture format.

Having the DVD to play on Tv is really a matter of convenience, over watching them on the PC.

I downloaded the flv videos and looked at them with GSPOT and it shows nothing about "ffmpeg"

I then used Freemake, added all the files and converted them to mpg, 720x480, 8500 kbps, 29.97fps.
Those mpg files should add to UVS10 without problems and create a DVD pretty close in quality to the original flv files.

Canuk,

Is that a double conversion of the flv files ? i.e. first to MPEG with those settings, and then to mpg?

No, to me mpeg and mpg are the same

Sorry I just reread my post and see where the confusion comes from. I corrected that post
