Capture from video camera
I enjoy the Video Studio Pro X5 over X3 and I finally got the machine to accept the driver for the samsung minidvd video camera. I selected capture video and started playing the video and hit start capture. It appears to work, but it only records and saves maybe 30 seconds of video. I did a 15 minute tour of a cave but less than 30 seconds of the video is saved. Can anyone explain how i can correct this problem?

Re: Capture from video camera
If that camcorder records to minDVDs then you should not need to use "capture". Simply copy the video files to your hard drive.

Re: Capture from video camera
That is what I am trying to do. The software is suppose to capture and record the video from the camcorder and save it. It only saves less than 30 seconds of the video. Unless I am using the wrong option what option will record and save the video from the camera to the HD?

Re: Capture from video camera
I think what he is saying is to use Windows' file manager to drag-and-drop the files from your camcorder into the computer. Don't use VideoStudio for this transfer... use the file manager in Windows.arachiya wrote:That is what I am trying to do. Also you may be able to take that miniDVD and put it into your system DVD player and copy the files from there to your hard drive. That way you don't have to even connect the camcorder to your system. I know that my player is able to play miniDVDs and I think most do.

Re: Capture from video camera
I will try that, I did not think of trying to drag and drop the files from the camera. How do I access the camera in order to drag the files?
I have placed the disk into the computers drive (after it was finalized) but the computer said there was not "Valid Content". Which is strange since this is how I usually do it.

Re: Capture from video camera
Your camera should have a Usb port, so you connect it to the computer with a USB cable. Then the camera drive should show up in Windows, just like another drive. You go into that drive locate the video and copy and paste it into the computer...

Re: Capture from video camera
You connect the camcorder to your PC via a USB cable. The camcorder should then appear as just another "removable drive or device"

Re: Capture from video camera
It appears in the devices section and videostudio can access it and I can use it for a webcam, but what do i use to see the files and transfer them. By itself, I am not able to access the files on the miniDVD in the camera. Some program is needed to access it, not just the driver.... right? I wish the camera offered the option to transfer the video to the memory card, it only offers transfer from the card to the dvd.

Re: Capture from video camera
you do not use any programme to transfer the files - CLOSE Videostudio you do not need it to transfer the files.
Plug your camcorder to your computer with a USB cable and switch the camera on. Now open "Computer" or "Windows Explorer" - or whatever you normally open to view all the files on your computer.
When the file manager window opens select your computer so that you can see all the drives connected to it - you should notice a new drive which will usually have a name related to the make of your camera - double click on that and you should see all the videos on your camera - there will be a number of them.
Now drag and drop the files from the camera folder to a folder on the computer hard drive - "My Videos" is a good start.
Once all the files are on your computer disconnect the camera - NOW is the time to open VideoStudio and use the 'Import Video' option to browse to the files on your hard drive and import them to VideoStudio.

Re: Capture from video camera
That was the first thing I did after the failure of the VS to load it in. The camera does not appear on the list under Computer at all. It appears in the device manager as a imaging device but not as a drive. I may be missing a driver, but Samsung does not make a driver for this camera for win 7 pro... only for xp to vista. I got the driver to work through the compatibility option but that did not work on the codec program that came on the disk... which again is why I am trying to feed the video to VS. My only other option is to connect the camera to my dvd burner (the one to put my VHS cassettes onto DVD) and burn it to a dvd. The computer definitely accepts those.

Re: Capture from video camera
Despite the other solutions, I still want to know why VS is not loading and saving the video as it is suppose to.

Re: Capture from video camera
You have not said which camera you are using. Is it the SC-DX103? If so it records in MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 format.
Did you allow VS to "look" at the camera as an external drive? In my experience the minidisk and card storage systems create files which are available to VS as if from an external drive. So follow Brian's advice.
The "camera" option refers to cameras that record on to tape (i.e. DV cameras) and transfer using the IEEE 1394 "FireWire" protocol. These cameras record a continuous stream of video with markers giving the time and date of the shot. VS then uses this marker to separate the continuous video stream into individual shots for editing. You are looking at two different methods of recording video and they have to be treated seperately.
The miniDVD, I assume, has already allocated your shots into files which you can use directly.
I have both a DV camera which I connect via FireWire and a SD based camera. With the SD camera I plug the SD card into my card reader and download from there.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

What is the make/model of that camcorder?

Re: Capture from video camera
Samsung SCDX103/XAA Digicam with card and minidvd recording. Discontinued by Samsung. The driver meant for XP and Vista is working with Win 7. VS sees the playback and live video, the computer sees it as a webcam so it is working. VS only records a few seconds of the video when i play it back and try to capture it.
