Videostudio Pro X5 - ERROR File Format Mismatch [1083:1:2]

Post by cs2 »

Hi all,

Thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

Long story short, last july I was running VideoStudio X3 when I
captured wedding video I had filmed to my hard drive from a hired Sony HVR-Z1P.

I was to wait to edit the video until further footage was provided to me by the bride and groom.

In that time I upgraded to VideoStudio X5 - I have gone in to edit the july footage today, and video studio
won't recognise the files.

Displaying "Unable to open file - File Format mismatch [1083:1:3]".

So, a few things.

I am running Windows Pro (64 bit) (the rest of the computer details are in my profile)

-> I have installed VideoStudio Pro X5 service pack 1

-> I am going into the "2. Edit" section and clicking on the "Import Media Folder" to try and add the clips to
the library ready for use, it is here I get the error.

-> The july files play in all other programs on my computer, no problem (DivX, Windows Media player, etc)
they also played in videostudio x3 no problem

-> I have tried installing K-lite mega codec pack to no avail. I have tried uninstalling it, that didn't change anything either.
I have tried using G-Spot to pinpoint the codecs and it tells me that all required codecs are installed - however when I open the
file in Prism video converter it says unknown codec.

-> The files are saved as .avi but I am very uncertain which format I should convert them to as to preserve
the quality of the video.

I feel like converting them is my only option - which program should I use and what format should I save in
to preserve the highest quality please? It is filmed at PAL 720x576.

I am able to upload a (very banal) 16 second section of footage if that can help diagnose the formatting issue.

Any help would be very much appreciated please, as unfortunately I am very imited on time.
The couple are military and have been suddenly posted elsewhere and would like the video before they leave.

Thanks for your help,
K

How did you "capture" to your hard drive? I assume you used a Firewire connection.

Yes do upload a short clip so that we can take a look at it and see if there is something strange.

Since that camera is a HD camcorder why did you record in SD format?

Like Canuck, I too would like to know exactly how you captured the video to your hard drive. The Sony you used films in either HDV (high def mpeg-2) or DV/AVI, and the normal method of capturing these two formats is, as Canuck also suggested, via Firewire. I am not even sure that camera allows download via USB, but even if it does, I would assume it would be low quality streaming video...

Do you still have access to the original cassette(s) the video was filmed on?

If you filmed in SD, then the resulting file should have been DV/AVI, and all versions of VS, including X5, should be able to handle it -- AFAIK, the DV codec comes as part of Windows... But if this video opens OK in X3, can you open that program and insert a part of the original video, right click on it, and post all the Properties here, please? Otherwise, a small sample of the video would indeed be welcome.

Hi,

Thank you both for your replies.

I captured the video using videostudio X3
to the hard drive on my computer (not a portable hard drive).
Sorry, I should have clarified, I didn't mean I ripped directly to a portable hard drive.

Yes, I used Firewire to do this.

I do have access to the original cassettes, however not the original camera. I also do not
have the install files / cd key for X3 as I uninstalled it when I installed X5 and didn't worry about
keeping them when x5 seemed to work with everything else, which was silly of me.

I thought it would have been dv/avi as when I have previously captured using videostudio
that is what it has saved the files as. Could I have selected some screwy file type by accident?

If all else fails, is there a good conversion program I can use for the files?

Here is a link where I have uploaded the test video
(just a short clip testing out the settings):

Thank you so much for your help and patience.

Hi again,

In addition to my last post - I tried something new.

I tried opening the .avi files from the last wedding that I edited
(using the same camera, firewire, etc) with no problems in videostudio x3
and videostudio x5 wouldn't open those either. I know those files
are ok, as I could open/edit them in videostudio x3.

X5 also won't open the .vsp files from that project.

Managed to reinstall videostudio pro 13 and it won't take the files now either.

After a lot more reading, I have figured out the files are not DV/AVI but rather are DV/DVC.

codec: dvsd
name: DVC/DV Video
compatibility note: DV Type 1 AVI

The audio codec information won't come up at all.
Have tried using conversion programs to convert to type II AVI but then I lose the audio.

Am way out of my depth.

Thanks again for any help.

PS Canuck - I don't know why it recorded to SD instead of HD - I did the training
and checked the settings over and over, I will unfortunately have to put it down to inexperience with the camera.

I downloaded your test clip and added it to the Media Library and then to the timeline. It plays without problems in X5.

So there is nothing wrong with the clip nor is there a problem between the clip and X5.

Something has been changed/corrupted in your install

First time user here trying to find a replacement for Corel's other product VideoWave. Running trial of X5 15.1.0.34 on machine spec'd in my profile, and am getting the same file format mismatch problem with MP4 files.

A YouTube user found one workaround, which involved installing the current edition of DVIX. I suspect this only changed the codecs that the OS (and VSP x5) uses to open video files, and it didn't work in my case. As I do IT and this is a pretty pristine Win8 installation, I'm not going to fault my OS installation just yet. Though maybe having Roxio Creator installed isn't helping.

Perhaps changing the filename extension to reflect its container type would help? It doesn't look like a MP4 file as VSP X5 knows it.

[05 FEB 2013] As it turns out, Corel isn't kidding when they say you need the latest edition of QuickTime to manipulate certain file types, including the myriad of MP4 versions. At least to use a MP4 that incorporates the AVC and AAC codecs, you need to update, or in my case remove and reinstall, QuickTime 7.7.3. So that's solved for me, at least.
