PSP version of this video Tutorial

Hi guys! This will be my first post as a mere mortal.

Anyway... been trying to convert the steps of this 3 year old tutorials. The part where I'm having a problem is the first part where they set the preferences... I can't seem to find the equivalent of "Select “Guides, Grids and Slices” and enter “Every 50 pixels” for “Gridline” and “5″ for “Subdivisions.”"



btw.. I'm using either PSP X4 or X5.

Here's the breakdown of the steps.

1. Open Photoshop.

2. Press Command + K for “Preferences.”

3. Select “Guides, Grids and Slices” and enter “Every 50 pixels” for “Gridline” and “5″ for “Subdivisions.”

4. Create a new document 100 px by 100 px.

5. Use “Option + Delete” to fill in the background.

6. Use the Shape tool to make a 4 X 4 square for a face.

7. Use the same tool to draw in hair, neck shading, etc.

8. Click on “Filter,” “Add Noise” and set noise to 1%, “Gaussian” and “Monochromatic.”

9. Use the Burn tool and artistic license for the rest.

Hi. I have no idea what I'm talking about because I never use them, but when I see 'guides and grids' I think View/Change guide, grid and snap properties.

Edit: To be clear, I mean the View menu.

Am I missing something here, Abiel? The quoted step 1 above refers to (Adobe) Photoshop. Are you trying to convert a Photoshop tutorial to work with PaintShop or was that reference to Photoshop a typo?

Yes, I just want to know how to make it work with PSP and the quoted steps is the same steps performed in the video... I just included them just incase members don't want to watch the video.

What tutorial exactly? You didn't provide a link to the video. I have an idea but I want to make sure, and I can't do that without the video.

I want to assume you're talking about "Change Grid, Guide & Snap Properties" command found under the View menu. (This dialog is only available when an active image is open...at least that's the way it is in X5)

It may not work exactly like it does in Photoshop so I want to double check things. If you could post that link for us, thank you.

This is just a grid setting in Photoshop. Photoshop lets you set subgrids, which is just more grid with a bit of contrast to the main grid.
100 pixels x 100 pixels, grid of 50 x 50 would divide the image into quarters. Subgrid of 5 would be equivalent of 5x5 grid in PSP.

I just realized... I did not include the video tutorial... sorry about that. It should be in my original posts. Newbie bloopers... hehehe.

Block characters
1. New > in dialog box choose 100 x 100 for width and height. Set it as Raster and transparent.
2. Zoom in (roll mouse wheel to 400% to get a reasonable size.
3. View > Change Grid Guide and Snap properties.
4. Make sure the values all read 10 for grid positions and the units are set to pixels. In the Current Image Settings you can change the color of the grid lines so they stand out. Click OK
5. File> General Program Preferences > Units make sure that is set to pixels also.
6. View > Rulers . View> Grid . You should now have agrid where each square block is 10 pixels x 10 pixels as shown in the video. Zoom in to 800 % to check that out.
7. Select paintbrush tool, set size to 10 (pixels) and shape to square (to left of Size box)
8. Now by changing the paint brush colours you can draw what he guy on the video did . Use the shift key to draw straight lines by Click the first position and then Shift click the last position. (you can zoom back to about 400 % for convenience.

An advantage of having it on a transparent layer is that you can put another layer beneath it and change the background color, or you can Select the image and paste it on any other image.
