NewBlue effects show as trials

Post by MikeA »

I have VS 5 ultimate. My FX window shows 26 NewBlue effects (in various categories). Of these only 7 work without the NewBlue logo (trial versions I guess). Now, the info for VS 5 on the website says it comes with 20 effects. In fact, I have a project that used one of the NewBlue effects successfully that now shows the logo. If I try to use it, I get a parameter error. What has gone wrong? How do I get at least my 20 working again? There is apparently a link under some (maybe all - I didn't check) that activates an effect. However, clicking on that seemed to do no good. Any help appreciated.

Are you sure you have never installed any of the NewBlue Video Essentials packs? I ask since I certainly don't recall more than half a dozen or so NewBlue filters being included in VS X4 or X5, and certainly not 20. I actually bought their packs 1 - 4, and just yesterday found that one of them, when used, showed the NewBlue watermark. But I got a reminder message that I had not activated it on that computer. On entering the serial number for that pack, the watermark disappeared. But of course the serial number only came with the packs.

For the filters that came with Vs e.g. the picture-in-picture one, I don't recall any activation being required...

EDIT: checking my X5 Ultimate FX library, the ones that appeared to be included in the VS package appear to have been the New Blue Sampler Effects, the PnP one mentioned above (possibly under the Essentials II heading), a Background Generator from Essentials V, and also NewBlue Titler. Mind you, one or more of these could also have been freebies I saw on the NewBlue website...

The Corel comparison PDF at http://www.corel.com/content/pdf/vsx5/v ... rix_en.pdf says there are 20 NewBlue effects included with VS 5 Ultimate. The exact words are "NEW! NewBlue® Video Essentials – 20 high-end filters and effects" I actually have 26 shown in the effects window. Some of these may have been free downloads over the years. I have never bought a NewBlue effect directly.

This is what I have:
Essentials
Works - Pixelator. Trial - color fixer plus; crop border; flash removal; sharpen; soft focus; tint; touch up; video tuneup
Essentials II
Works - Picture in picture. Trial - none.
Essentials V
Works - Background generator. Trial - none.
Motion
Works - none; Trial - earthquake; motion blur; ripple; rolling waves; shear energy; spin blur; wrap; wiggle; xoom blur
Titler
Works - titler ex. Trial - none.
Sampler
Works - air brush; crop borders; water color. Trial - active camera; detail enhancer

Now - active camera (in the sampler set) worked a year ago (I have the video to prove it). It now shows a trial logo and also gives an error when I try to use it.

I'd be interested to know what are the 20 that are offered with VS 5 Ultimate and how that compares with my list. Anybody with a new installation able to look? Also what happened to the ones I had working - why did they stop working? And what is meant to happen when you click on the link button of the trial effects?

Actually, on further inspection I found I had two videos made from the same project, one on 1-3-2012 and one made 9-8-2012. No watermark on the first, but the watermark is on the second (as it is now if I preview). So what happened between those dates?

I am interested in how you classify what you have got. Some are designated 'trial' -- 19 of the filters you list. And a further 7 are not designated as trial. How did you know which ones were trial? Because they still have the watermark? Do you recall if you perhaps downloaded some from Do More and if so, perhaps they were only trial versions?

I can only acknowledge what you have linked as the Corel PDF on the subject, but again can only say that my own recall was of far less free (permanent) filters... Hopefully someone else will be able to shed more light on this mystery.

All my New Blue FX filters that are included as standard with X5 Ultimate are duplicated, see attached screen shot of Motion Effects, 1 set contains the watermark on each effect and the other set contains no watermark. I reported this to Tech Support, (when we could contact them for advice without paying for it) months ago and they confirmed that they were aware of the issue and that a patch would be released to correct the duplication but to date no patch has been released. This may or may not be relevant to MikeA's issue, but it does appear that the Corel included New Blue FX filters may have a bug that shows on some OS. All the packs that I have purchased from New Blue only appear once without watermarks

To be honest, I can't remember whether I downloaded any NewBlue effects that were trials. I really doubt it. I probably would have downloaded ones that were not trial ones (by trial I mean they have the watermark on the movie).

As noted, what is curious is that the Active Camera one worked without the watermark last year and now has the watermark. I think this is true of others as I don't recall so many with watermarks. In fact, it seem to me the opposite is true - there were more without the watermark than with.

I suspect this is related to some upgrade or other, which has messed up what was working before. Interesting that in the reply by RobertOZ only 10 distinct (i.e., not 20 as on the Corel website) NewBlue effects came with his installation. What is the truth here?

There are actually 25 New Blue effects included with X5 Ultimate

New Blue Essentials - 8 effects (duplicated) plus the Pixelator effect
New Blue Video Essentials II - 1 effect
New Blue Motion Effects - 9 effects (duplicated)
New Blue Sampler Effects - 5 effects
New Blue Titler EX - 1 effect

1 set of the duplicated effects show the watermark, all the others display correctly.

OK - you can laugh at me for doing something dumb, but I accidentally uninstalled VS 5. I was playing with some exe files deep in the folders (duh!) and it uninstalled the program. But this was useful, because in the course of re-installing I observed what it was doing. The installed version was 15.0.0258 and I have not yet applied the service pack.
After installing the basic ultimate package I had 5 NewBlue Sampler effects, 1 Video essentials, 1 video essentials II, that is 7 in all. All worked and were not trial effects.
I then installed the bonus package. This gave me 1 video essentials V, and 9 motion. These also all worked - none were trial.
I then installed the freebie Titler EX effect (info on it is sent when one registers). This provided 1 effect that worked.
BUT, it also added 8 trial effects to video essentials AND it duplicated the 9 motion ones, though these were all trial effects. So now, as elsewhere reported, I have every motion effect twice, one working and one trial.
Note that my Active Camera effect now works, whereas when I wrote the first entry to this series, it did not work!
Also note, ignoring the trial effects, I have 18 (7 from the first installation, 10 from the bonus, and 1 from the extra). Does not add up to 20 as advertized but not far off.

I will report later what happens when I update using SP1.

Whoops! Spoke too soon. The Active Camera shows a parameter error box when I try to play with it, and another effect does the same.

One more thing. After installing SP1 two of the 5 sampler effects became trials. Nothing else changed. This pretty much takes me back to where I started except for the duplicates among the motion effects. There, somewhere along the line I must have lost the workable ones leaving the trials only. I don't have duplicates elsewhere as has been reported.

Since I still have VS 4 ultimate installed, I looked at what was there. I have 5 sampler effects. None are trials and the Active Camera works fine. I have 1 video essentials (pixelator), and 1 video essentials II (pic in pic). Both are not trials and work fine too.

All of this seems rather a mess. It is hard, it seems to me, to get help from Corel now without paying, and I don't see why I should pay for what is a software issue.

I asked on Chat about what NewBlue effects one should have. Here is a copy of the conversation.

Kris B: Here is the list>> NEWBLUE VIDEO ESSENTIALS
pixelator
color fixer plus
crop borders
flash remover
sharpen
soft focus
tint
touch up
video tuneup

NEWBLUE VIDEO ESSENTIALS 2
Picture-in-picture
NEWBLUE VIDEO ESSENTIALS 5
background generator

NEWBLUE MOTION EFFECTS
earthquake
motion blur
ripple
rolling waves
shear energy
spin blur
warp
wiggle
zoom blur

NEWBLUE SAMPLER EFFECTS
active camera
air brush
crop borders
detail enhancer
water color

You: Thanks. Are they all usuable or are some trial effects (meaning one has to pay separately for them)?
Kris B: They are not included in the trial.
You: Sorry! They all should be usuable without the watermark showing?
Kris B: The purchased version will allow you to use all the effects without any watermark.

So that is the theory!

Basically - I have those effects but some are trials and show the watermark and a couple don't work. Plus I have some duplicates (harmless but annoying).
