THUMBNAIL HANDLER - VICTORY AT LAST

Post by PattyWraps »

I use PSP9 - also had PSP10 installed but rarely used it. Recently had a virus removal from compuiter at a shop, and when I tried to open PSP10 it would not open and said it was damaged - redownloaded it. THEN my desktop icons for PSP changed from an actual image back to PSP paint palett image - downloaded a thumbnail handler from BOT but it didn't change anything. Previous to redownloading PSP10, I had a program installed to change the thumbnails, which worked perfectly. So, redownloading 10 changed something and I hate it.
Please, what can I do to get my thumbnail images on the desktop to revert to the actual images.

I use HP Vista PC, Windows Vista Home Premium, 64 bit operating system, 8.00 GB

"desktop icons" - Are these the icons for the programs or icons for image you have saved to the desktop. Are the files jpg, .psp .tif or what?
Is it only the Desktop that is affected?
Placing those files in a folder and choosing View --> Small Icons, or Medium Icons or Large Icons is the problem still there.
Can you post a screen shot of what you are seeing?

They are the icons for the image. I always save new things I create to the desktop first. They are PSP files. It is affected both on the desktop and inside the file. It does not matter if I have it on small icons, or large icons, still shows the PSP paint pallet instead of the actual image.

Sounds like you have Icons instead of Thumbnails. Go to the Microsoft link, scroll down to Turn off visual effects and follow the instructions. Particularly make certain that Show thumbnails instead of icons has a check by it.

I followed the instructions - show thumbnails instead of icons was already checked - so there is another problem somewhere. Thanks for replying

OK, so Jpegs are displaying properly yet PSP images are not. Correct? The files may have become disassociated with PSP either through an update somewhere or installing/uninstalling software somewhere along the way. If you right click the file on your desktop then choose Open With, then select PSP having Always use this program checked at the bottom does that clear it up? Does PSP show up on your Default Programs list? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... by-default

PSP does NOT SHOW UP in default programs list and I see no place that says add programs. However, it does appear in the Default Programs=Set Associations Box.
When I right click on the PSP icon on desktop, it only gives me the option to OPEN, not OPEN WITH, but it does open in PSP

This whole mess started when I downloaded a free sample of PSP10 that I had in a file - I have since uninstalled it, but problem still persists.

I thought it was odd you didn't have an "open with" option on the context menu so I did some searching and found this. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/24315 ... -menu.html

Some users were complaining many of their right-click menu options disappeared after SP1. It won't solve your icon problem but might help with the context menu.

I don't know for sure how it happened that PSP Thumbnails started showing up again as actual PICTURES not PSP paint palette signs. I have unstalled PSP9 and X several times - downloaded again several times - removed and redownloaded the BOT thumbhandler several times - messed with several things - then Windows all of a sudden said it could not open JPEG files or PNG files, so I changed to "view in Windows photo gallery" everything on the computer changed to the actual picture thumbnails like I wanted. VICTORY - I am never going to change anything again, EVER.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help me.

Special thanks to Cassel who has always been so helpful with any PSP problem, and I love her scripts.
