Video pro x5 imports
Can I import XMF files into Video Pro X5 without first converting them? I cannot find the answer to this on the sales information.
Also is there any way to import those XMF files into my current version (Video Pro X2).
Thanks.
John.

Are you talking about MXF or XMF files? They are two different types.
They certainly are not common files.
Where did you get the files?

Re: Video pro x5 imports
From the corel.com website, the following are given as supported formats:
(EDIT: I now see that it is in fact an audio file...)
But the bottom line is that you will definitely need to do a conversion to one of the listed formats above before any version of Video Studio will be able to edit it...
You will quickly see that XMF is not included. In fact, I have to admit that I had never heard of such a format before this. I will even need to do a Google search to find out more about it!Input Formats Supported
Video: AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, AVCHD™, MPEG-4, H.264, BDMV, DV, HDV™, DivX®, QuickTime®, RealVideo®, Windows Media® Format, MOD (JVC® MOD File Format), M2TS, M2T, TOD, 3GPP, 3GPP2
Audio: Dolby® Digital Stereo, Dolby® Digital 5.1, MP3, MPA, WAV, QuickTime, Windows Media® Audio
Images: BMP, CLP, CUR, EPS, FAX, FPX, GIF, ICO, IFF, IMG, J2K, JP2, JPC, JPG, PCD, PCT, PCX, PIC, PNG, PSD, PSPImage, PXR, RAS, RAW, SCT, SHG, TGA, TIF, UFO, UFP, WMF
Disc: DVD, Video CD (VCD), Super Video CD (SVCD)
But the bottom line is that you will definitely need to do a conversion to one of the listed formats above before any version of Video Studio will be able to edit it...

Re: Video pro x5 imports
There are also MXF files which are video related (from Adobe programs I think). That is why I asked which type the user was referring.

Re: Video pro x5 imports
Thanks canuck -- hadn't heard of that one either!
But the trusty Wikipedia provides this information:
Hmmm... as a sort of footnote, I have FFmpeg on my computer, and can use it to at least encode video using the Custom > AVI route. But I have no idea whether it can decode MXF within VS...NLE and MXF enablers
There are an increasing number of professional NLE's that can work with MXF files natively including Avid, Adobe Premiere Pro 3.1 or above, Sony Vegas, and GrassValley EDIUS or via import operations like in Final Cut Pro using the Sony XDCAM Transfer plug-in. Latest versions of Avid editing products store media in Avid MXF Op-Atom and import/export MXF Op1a or using mxfSPEEDRAIL F1000 applications that supports any kind of MXF flavour. Native MXF access in Apple's Final Cut Pro and other Mac OS X applications can be achieved by using the MXF Import QT component from Hamburg Pro Media. PiTiVi is the first open source video editor to support the Material Exchange Format (MXF).
MXF converters
FFmpeg, an open source project added support for muxing and demuxing of MXF and MXF D-10 in FFmpeg 0.5, released in March 2009.[4][5]
MXF DeMuxer from MXF-SOLUTIONS is a DirectShow filter for de-multiplexing MXF file, and provides frame accuracy seeking within the file.
MXF Muxer from MXF-SOLUTIONS is a DirectShow filter for multiplexing media streams into MXF file.
mxfSPEEDRAIL F1000 from MOG Technologies is a tool to rewrap GXF, P2, QuickTime, XDCAM, MXF, and other file types into other containers like: MXF OP1A, Avid OPAtom, MP4 without transcoding and changing the video and audio essences. The rewrapping of the media file can start while the file is being generated or recorded.
XFConverter from OpenCube Technologies enables users to convert wrapper formats (such as MXF, QuickTime, GXF, AVI, etc.) without having to modify their video/audio essences.

Re: Video pro x5 imports
Guys, thanks very much for your helpful replies. I had mistyped the file type and it is indeed MXF as Ken suggests. The files are from a Canon Professional camera and their website describes the files as MPEG-2 MXF which still leaves me a little confused as to whether it still needs to be converted before using it in video studio. A quick check on Pro X2 did not recognize the file.
When installing the Canon utilities software it looks for avid to be installed.
I am very happy using Pro X2 but if it makes the capture of clips from the Canon camera easier I would upgrade to Pro X5, alternatively I will try the open source converter.
Thanks.
John.

Do a google search on "Convert MXF" and you will get lots of hits.johnj46 wrote:Guys, thanks very much for your helpful replies. I had mistyped the file type and it is indeed MXF as Ken suggests. Basically it seems that that "format" is used by "professional" camcorders and only a few high end software programs. None of the "user entry" video programs can handle the format. You will propbably have to get a 3rd party program to do the conversion that is accepted by VS X5

Re: Video pro x5 imports
You will note that the last quoted 'paragraph' in my last post above lists a number of MXF converters...

Re: Video pro x5 imports
Just to complete the story I converted a small MXF file to an AVI using winff. I believe that is the same as ffmpeg but has a GUI making it a little easier to use.
The file converted successfully and loads into my VS Pro2 so I'm very happy.
Thanks for all your help.
