video studio 9 slow DVD burning technical question

Post by mnolan »

This is a question, not a negative comment........

I have used a number of non-linear video editing products and am using video studio 9 for the first time. It was fairly easy to transition from the other systems once you figure out some of the quirks of the program.

My question is this.....if I hadn't logged into this forum and discovered the preferred method of rendering to an mpeg file, then burning the DVD, I would have given up on this program right at the outset. This seems like a critical problem that should be easy to fix. The other inexpensive programs seem to burn relatively quickly. What is it exactly that causes videostudio to take so long when burning straight from the time line?

just curious

Thanks

Also, note that the Recommended Procedure is just that -- it is quite possible to use Videostudio just as Ulead had intended it and be successful. It's just that not following the procedure seems to often result in longer rendering times, as well as outright failures.

very slow rendering speed when burning.

With VS8, all I was doing was

1) capture video to AVI files using auto-split scenes
2) Add a few titles to some scenes
3) Save the project
4) Go to Share step, add chapters, burn the project.

This was acceptable speed (4-5 hours for 1 hour video) in VS8.

With VS9, the same steps were very slow (1% in a hour).

So I searched this forum and realized I needed to render to mpeg file
first and then burn that project.

It is not acceptable why I can't do the steps 1-4 where it worked well in
VS8.

Naciselim,
Your method produced VERY long DVD burn times. You were lucky that the DVDs terminated without crashing or producing beer costers. Versions 7,8, and 9 all have the exact same problem when burning directly from the timeline.

I have requested half a dozen times that Ulead fix the problem. For some unknown reason, they have never complied. The easiest way to deal with the problem is to disable the Create Disk control if anything is in the timeline. The only option for the new user would be the correct one: Create Video File. In the Burn sequence, Add Project would be made invisible (disabled) because it produces the same bug. Finally, the Burn properties should default to the properties of the (first) video file that is added in the SHARE/Create Disk window. The tiny Gear-Shaped icon for setting Burn properties should be enlarged and moved to the upper left corner of the Burn screen, where it would be obvious to the user.

IMHO, this would eliminate 80-90% of the problems and frustrations that new users face.
