Dual layer DVDs buring with Ulead VideoStudio 10, possible ?

Post by pedro26 »

Hi,

According to DVD Decrypter my DVD burner LG's HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10N can burn dual layer discs of the type +R (not -R) with a capacity of 8.5 Gb. Is this possible with Ulead VideoStudio 10, or is more modern software required ?

Thanks

Stretching the old memory a bit there - the oldest version I currently have loaded on my PC is version 12 and that can do dual layer discs as can all versions since then.

I cannot remember when the dual layer option was added - go to "Share >> create Disc >> DVD" and when the burning module opens look in the bottom left corner - does it have "DVD 4.7G" showing which when you click on it shows a selection the same as my screen shot from V12 below.

otherwise we need to wait to see if anyone else still has V10 and can check for you.

Thanks Brian,

Just fired up U VS10 and it does have DVD 8.5 Gb as an option. That's not to say it will work but it is certainly there.

BTW have you ever transferred VHS tapes to DVD using U VS 10 ? (i.e. for capture) as I'm having problems with PowerDirector software bundled with Climax Digital on large files.

Yes I have transferred many VHS tapes to DVD - but not with Powerdirector I am afraid.

My previous PC on which I would have had version 10 had an analogue capture card installed and I was able to use that along with VideoStudio to make straight analogue captures without any problems.

my current PC does not have an analogue card but I now use this device :- http://www.honestech.com/main/vhs-to-dvd-50-deluxe.asp

which captures direct using VideoStudio - although I have also used it with Roxio -it captures direct as mpeg-2 and is easily edited in VS.

What sort of problems are you having with your current set-up ?

Hi Brian,

Basically the DVD burner does not seem to be working from the PowerDirector software on the new computer. I have now just installed UVS 10 on the newer/faster (Windows Vista) computer (As well as the superior speed aspect I know how to burn DVDs from UVS10) and an old problem has accompanied the installation, no sound of the captured video clips. I can see the wave file stream (indicating a sound signal is there) when I try to playback the captured video, but no sound. I think that there was a patch for UVS10 which I think also addressed this, but Corel don't seem to host it any longer.

Some fixes for the same problem suggest altering lines for uvs.ini- Here's what I found from a poster on the net.
"I found a fix for this problem and it works on VS 8-11 for XP users:
1.Make sure showing hidden files is enabled in Explore\Tools\Folder Options.
2.Go to All Users\Application Data\Ulead Systems and locate the uvs.ini file. Open it and go to [VIODRIVER], on PlayAC3 and DecodeAC3 set the value to 1. (You will find it set to 0.)
3.Under [VIODRIVER] add a line called ADVANCE=1, this will add advanced settings for MPEG encoding.
4.Exit and save."

I went into ULEAD.dat where uvs.ini resides and backed up the newly installed version of uvs.ini (renaming to back.ini) but installing the uvs.ini from the windows XP computer (much slower but with working UVS10) and I tried also editing back.ini as suggested and putting a copy in the ULEAD.DAT folder named as uvs.ini.

None of these 'fixes' worked. Has anybody got copies of the patches to UVS10 ? Otherwise its back to old computer. (I can hook up the portable hard drive>).

Any other suggestions ?

Thanks

ps the three audio clip to be found under the Audio tab in UVS10 do give sound out through the computer's speakers

pps If I go to any of the captured clips and double click them they play in windows media player with both sound and video

Something I should have added, during the installation of UVS10 on the Vista machine there was a warning that the file uvs.ini had failed to register and it asked me if I wished to continue anyway, to which I replied yes, then I tried a subsequent 'repair' installation of UVS 10.

I have been rummaging in my archives - the only thing I can find relative to Version 10 is a file called UVS10_SP1_E.exe

Looks like service pack 1 - but I do not remember what it did - It's only 7.5Mb so I could e-mail it to you - but you load it on your computer at your risk - it is untouched by me - other than having run it.

do you want to try it.

Thanks Brian,

Renaming the patch exe file file to ***.bak fooled Outlook's filter, and it installed ok and I now have some progress.

I now have sound when the clip is played in the main clip window, but no sound when it is dragged into the project line/window and I try to play it, plus I now get the message:-
"High-quality playback mode is disabled with the current project settings"

Will that affect the final sound on any DVD burned with this project ?

Is there a way to sort this out, so I can listen to sound of the project itself in the project window ?

Thanks

ps I found an old post which suggests going into the project properties and to try changing it from PAL-DVD to MPEG-2

Done that now it seems to be "rendering" the clip in the project line

pps Tried another tip installing loads of codec packs, no joy clip has sound but not the project.
