Some Sample images need relink, but can't
I have installed Video Studio 5x Pro Ultimate twice now and am still having a problem with the sample images. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. If I take the default install it puts the sample images in C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X5\Samples\Image\, but tries to find them in C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X4\Samples\Image\. Not all of them, but an example would be the I15.JPG file. When they are in the (x86) directory, it asks me to relink them, but it gives me the error of "Some clips have not been relinked successfully". When I reinstalled everything into the C:\Program Files\ directory structure and I try to use the I15.JPG file, it looks for it in C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X4\Samples\Image\I15.JPG but says "The content of these files is unreadable."
The directory structure says it is installed in the X4 version, but I have NEVER had the X4 or any other version on this computer before.
So, how can I use the sample images? The images are in C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X5\Samples\Image. By the looks of it, only the samples that the file name starts with an "I" don't work. If they start with either "V,M or S", they are fine and they are looked for in the X5 directory.
Any way to get those X4 "I*.JPG" samples to work?

delete all the image thumbnails which do not work and are currently in the 'Samples' library - this does NOT delete the samples themselves.
now in the very top left corner of the library pane you will see a folder (to the left of three gold icons) when you mouse over the folder the tip will say "Import Media files" - click on that and when the browse window opens navigate to the images on your drive and select them - you can select all using the "select - - shift+select" option - then click 'open' and all should appear in the library correctly linked.

Hi
It does appear that you are having a similar problem to my Lenovo Laptop running Windows 7 64Bit
There are two issues regarding the library images.
Please try running your program in XP Compatibility mode.
Right click the desktop thumbnail and select properties.
Choose the Compatibility tab and select XP compatibility mode.
That should cure your problem.
You may however have some issues using the screen capture and system audio which only works with W7, but possible to set the system to record as Windows XP settings.
Secondly if you have installed earlier versions of video studio the link to X4 is a known by Corel who are now preparing to provide a fix, only identified a few days ago, I guess the patch may take some time? This problem does not show any errors as the files are installed correctly.
If the Compatibility option cures your problem please report it to Corel Support

Re: Some Sample images need relink, but can't
I was really hoping that would work, but it doesn't. When I try to import them, it gives me an error "Unable to open file [C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel\Vide...\I15.jpg].BrianCee wrote:delete all the image thumbnails which do not work and are currently in the 'Samples' library - this does NOT delete the samples themselves.

File format mismatch.

It cuts off the directory name, but I am assuming that the "\Vide...\" is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X5\Samples\Video" which those files don't exist in. Those files are only in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X5\Samples\Images" directory where I tried to import them from, so I am not sure why it is trying the "Video" directory.

Re: Some Sample images need relink, but can't
lata, Your solution did/does work to an extent. But I don't want to run in XP Compatibility mode. When I do, every time I try to run it, I have to put in the administrator password.
Before posting about this problem, I had searched for this error with Google, I saw this, or at least similar to this, problem has been going on more then just a few days. The solution of XP Compatibility mode was also given. If it has been going on for a while, I don't understand how come this wasn't fixed. From what I saw, it only seems to happen on the 64bit Windows. I "think" it was just Win7 x64, but don't remember from my searches.
You mentioned that if I had installed earlier versions of video studio the link to X4 is a known by Corel. Well, please now tell them that it has nothing to do with any earlier versions being installed, at least in my situation and it is an X5 problem (possibly X4 too). I have NEVER, EVER had a previous version of Video Studio on this computer. The last image/video program from this company I had installed on one of my computers, and it wasn't this computer, was Ulead PhotoImpact and that is when it was still owned by Ulead, so that has been a while.

Re: Some Sample images need relink, but can't
As Trevor said, we are aware that Corel is trying to find a solution to the problem, though we have no idea when or even if a patch might emerge for it. (We don't work for Corel and are just users like you.) Part of the problem is that it, while obviously real, only affects a small number of users, so may be difficult for Corel to replicate. You will, for instance, see from my computer details under my icon, that I am running X5 (only Corel VS version on this computer, and no previous versions on it ever) on Windows 7 64 bit. But I don't have this strange reference to previous versions. All is as it should be, and I did nothing special during the installation of X5...

I'm not sure why Videostudio should not import them when you actually re-link direct to them - did you actually delete all the thumbnails in the library first - then use the 'import media' option - it should import images from anywhere on your system.
what about creating a brand new folder - say in "My pictures" and call it say 'VideoStudio images' - then move all the problem images in there.
now DELETE all the image thumbnails in the library pane - and then use the import folder to browse to the new location and select.
can you import your own images into a library pane - if you can do that I do not understand why you cannot import those images - they are after all just jpeg images - no different to your own photos or images.

Re: Some Sample images need relink, but can't
Hi
The compatibility issue and re-linking is quite strange, it does not re-link successfully although the process seems or indicates to re-link when you try to select an image you get other errors.
I posted some screen shots on my web site.
Video Studio is pointing to the C:\Program Files structure for the files when it should be C:\Program Files (x86) this only occurs for 64Bit systems.
It does appear that it is the libries structure that is affected, so trying to re-build the library does not help.
I am sure that other problems will occur running Video Studio, I just haven’t got that far.
A recent post of Brians identified opening VSP Project files, again cured by Compatibility XP mode.
On e other issue in running in XP mode is the Screen Capture Audio, System Audio only works for W7 not XP, the good news is you can still capture Stereo Mix.
I guess if the problem had been wide spread then Corel would be more aware.
All I can suggest is that anybody suffering are prompted approach Corel Support, the more they hear about the problem the quicker they will react, it does seem to be a growing problem.
Another Issue is targeting X4 files when it should be X5, but this is also a separate problem that affects XP users as well as W7, most people will not see the problem as no errors are given as the files do exist, again Corel are aware and as far as I know will provide a patch, indeed this issue may be confusing the Compatibility issue.

If the thumbnails in the library are looking in C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X4\Samples\Image (even though you never had X4) can you just create that folder and copy the images into it - does X5 find them then.

Brian, I tried creating that and copying the files over and it still didn't work.BrianCee wrote:If the thumbnails in the library are looking in C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X4\Samples\Image (even though you never had X4) can you just create that folder and copy the images into it - does X5 find them then.
I am trying to test all of this before purchasing it for my son to install on his similar laptop. He is 11 and starting to get into doing a little video production for his utube account and friends. He is wanting to use a green screen and chroma key. I am going to "try" to get something cheap and simple set up for that.
Thank you for your help.

Re: Some Sample images need relink, but can't
Everything you have said to me so far suggests to me that you cannot import your own images into VideoStudio even - because basically that's what I suggested when I said to create a brand new folder in your 'My pictures' folder and import from there - if you can import your own images I just cannot understand why you cannot import the Videostudio samples - they are after just jpegs same as your photos may be.
I also can not follow the logic - my system works correctly - but I have just tried importing one of the X4 images into my X5 and it did that with no problem at all - so now I have two identical images in my library but one is in the X5 samples and the other is in the X4 samples - VideoStudio does not seem to mind where the images are - it just links to them.
What about opening the images in "paint" or whatever other photo editor you might have and doing a 'Save as' with a different name for each one - that should remove anything attached to the images.
have you tried making a new library and importing to that - it doesn't matter how many libraries you have.

Re: Some Sample images need relink, but can't
Hi
If running the program in XP Compatibility mode allows you to use the program correctly then it would suggest that you have the same problem as my Laptop as described on my web site.
I am unable to make the program work correctly without using XP Compatibility, I am also certain there may be other issues with the program.
Again this only affects a few users.
You indicate that your sons laptop is a different machine to the one you are using, it is quite likely that it will work ok, but you will only know by installing the trial on your sons machine.
If that does work ok, it would be interesting to know the difference between the two pc’s
