PSP and Photoshop plugins
I have been using PSP since 1990! (ver 3.14) and upgraded last year from X2 to X4 Utlimate
I am an enthousiastic B&W photographer and want to use the Silver Efex Pro 2 plugin from Nik Software as part of my workflow
Unfortunately it is not supported by PSP X4 Utlimate, and as it seems not by the X5 either
It is very unfortunate Corel don't keep-up with the evolution of Photoshop plugins
It looks like I have no other choice but divorce from Corel and move to Adobe with Photoshop (such a shame after all that time!)

Re: PSP and Photoshop plugins
I think your problem is with Nik Software, not Corel. If the plugin needs to work within PSP, then it's up to Nik Software to write the plugin so it does. It's unrealistic to expect Corel to attempt to modify their code to accommodate undocumented changes that Adobe might make to their program....

Re: PSP and Photoshop plugins
Agree with photodrawken. But perhaps Corel might start a division to generate its own brand of Nik competitive filters , however make then compatible with as many graphics programs as possible.
Probably a dream though as they still have not developed PSP to work with standard apple macs. In these days of competitive graphics programs and computer systems those that make quality versions suitable for the maximum number of clients should reap the benefits.

Re: PSP and Photoshop plugins
Well, if Corel included the Nik Color Efex 3 within the X4 package, it would seem only logical that Corel would take on the task of making PSP compatible with other Nik Software plugins.photodrawken wrote:I think your problem is with Nik Software, not Corel. And since Adobe made the choice of being fully PC/Mac compatible, one might consider logical to move from Corel to Adobe.
I am still debating but this is bugging me, specially since all the other softwares I use for the DAM workflow are compatible with both platforms (DxO optics Pro, PhaseOne Media Pro and DxO ViewPoint)
So, if I was to move away from Windows to Mac OS, the choice would then become obvious to me.

That's backwards thinking, for sure.FredL wrote:Well, if Corel included the Nik Color Efex 3 within the X4 package, it would seem only logical that Corel would take on the task of making PSP compatible with other Nik Software plugins.

Re: PSP and Photoshop plugins
Yeah, Corel did not fix their own plugin implementation in order to include the Nik Filters. The Nik Filters are a special version of the filters for PSP. Most likely done as a joint project between Nik and Corel (I don't have the full story) so it would actually be on both of them to make it work. Afterall, Nik doesn't know exactly which functions PSP has properly implemented from the Adobe Plugin Framework and Corel doesn't know which functions Nik needs. Nik can more easily find out which functions are available through trial and error, Corel not so much. So I imagine a lot of back and forth was done to make those filters possible.

Re: PSP and Photoshop plugins
Nik was sold to Google last year so who knows what may happen. Corel hasn't upgraded their plug-in engine for a while and it is time for that to change IMO. There are a lot of plug-ins out there that should work with PSP (.8bf) but PSP usually is missing the boat on one thing or another.

Corel coming to the Apple OS.X party???
On a more global note, I'm commenting on the comment about Corel's reluctance about coming to the Apple Mac OS.X party. I think that companies like Corel and Serif should seriously think about coming out and playing with the big boys and provide their products for us OS.X guys. Apple makes a very nice product with a huge spectrum of supporting software. I am personally fed up with Windows and Microsoft's antics over the years. So I have moved over to Apple and have just one or two lingering issues to make it a complete move... that being the lack of Corel and Serif quality products. I have been a huge user of Corel and JASC products over the years.. Having to leave those behind to adopt Adobe is not a pleasant thought. I have my fingers crossed.

I doubt that Corel will re-write PSP for use on an Apple Mac.painzerguy wrote:On a more global note, I'm commenting on the comment about Corel's reluctance about coming to the Apple Mac OS.X party. That is a HUGE job, they don't have the staff.
I agree about the antics of Microsoft re-inventing the wheel every so often!
Sadly, being a long term user of PSP doesn't guarantee it's future, I wish it did.

You'll get a much better response if you start your own thread. Go to the top of this forum, click New Topic, name it, and go from there.teachings wrote:Hi painzerguy,

With the news that Adobe is moving away from the desktop to Creative Cloud only, and the amount of disgruntled customers growing each day, now would be an ideal time for Corel to create Mac versions...I for one will be dropping Adobe and I'm sure a lot of other Pro Photographers feel the same way. As a Mac user my only other alternative is Gimp. There needs to be a viable alternative to photoshop and Lightroom.

Re: PSP and Photoshop plugins
I came to the Corel Website today hoping to see them capitalizing on the Adobe fiasco, and telling everyone that there are new changes coming down the road. But, I did not see it, so I will assume that Corel does not care, and will not do anything to bring the masses from the Adobe Exodus into their reach.davetee wrote:With the news that Adobe is moving away from the desktop to Creative Cloud only, and the amount of disgruntled customers growing each day, now would be an ideal time for Corel to create Mac versions...I for one will be dropping Adobe and I'm sure a lot of other Pro Photographers feel the same way. I have used PS since PSPX, and there is a lot that bugs me about the program, but I wanted to know that they were working on a new, professional, product, that would take care of our needs.

Re: PSP and Photoshop plugins
I feel like a complete idiot. I am attempting to install eyecandy 7 plug ins onto PSPX5. I can NOT get them to show up. I've tried making a 'plugins' folder. I've tried setting File/preferences/file locations...
and I'm still coming up with "No Plug ins loaded" WHAT AM I DOING WRONG???
Please help me, in layman's terms as I'm kind of computer challenged lol
Thanks
