PSP x5 crashes

Post by davebondanza »

I received the update to PSPx5 for Xmas. I have Win7 Ultimate w ample resources. I also have PSPx4 and have used it without any problems. About 1 day after using PSPx5 it started crashing with memory errors. Now, it won't even start. I have uninstalled it, reinstalled it, deleted the db and any other thing I found here and on the web. Same thing happens, get a few hours use and suddenly a crash. Investing too much time in trying to keep this running. Now when I start it, this message comes up. Anyone else having this issue or have a permanent fix?

Did you by any chance install SP3? Some users have had similar problems after doing so. I am still using version 15.1.0.10 with no problems...

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the reply. I assume you are referring to SP1 as I don't see a SP3 on the Corel website. I believe SP1 was automatically installed. I had noted the version number on initial install 15.1.0.10 This is also displayed on the startup screen right before it crashes, but notably in the crash report it lists the version as 15.1.0.91.

I then went to the Corel website for any update, downloaded and launched the SP1 update. It started and then stopped stating the software was up to date and did not need the update. Therefore it appears it was automatically downloaded and installed. Thoughts? Is there anyway to prevent the SP1 update or is there a hotfix?

Update -

I deleted the 3 folders that house the dbs for the thumbnails and other things. This allowed it to start back up. I read in another thread somewhere that people were having problems with the manage tab. I clicked on edit before the thumbnails loaded and set preferences to start PSP5 in edit more. Interestingly it has not crashed. I hope the Corel team is looking at the manage functions. I never used them in PSP4, perhaps there is a link to the problem here.

Ever a fan of PSP I have to wonder though, is Elements this quirky? I mean after all, we're no longer in the mode where software should be hit or miss. Isn't Corel doing any QC before these releases?

Well I was crash free for about 4 days and then poof, an error right during the use of the program. Now the program will not open. I deleted the db files, but this did not cure the problem, I will uninstall and try again, but this is getting nutty. It appears the PSP X5 is not ready for release. I see numerous people complaining of the same things, this should be fixed.

Up until SP2, I still had X3, X4 installed on my computer and everything worked fine. The night they released SP2 I attempted to download it and it would get stuck at 8% and proceed no further looking for PSPPro.msi. I re-install PSPX5 again and then downloaded SP2 and it took, and that's when all my problems began.

I click on my PSPX5 icon and the splash screens would appear informing me of the modules being loaded and it would default to the "MANAGE" tab, within 10-15 secs PSPX5 would stop running. I tried this numerous times and the same results would occur.

I contacted COREL and they passed along a few tips here and there but could not resolve the issue either. They had me un-install X3, saying it was not certified to run on a Win 8 machine...fine. I went ahead and removed X2, X3, and X4 just to be on the safe side. Nothing worked. I still would get the dreaded "Corel PSP X5 has stopped working".

I wanted to find a way to not use the "Manage" tab, so I went to "PREFERENCES>DEFAULT LAUNCH WORKSPACE>and selected "EDIT". So now when I open PSPX5, it defaults right to the EDIT tab and I am able to conduct my work. Too much time has been wasted contacting COREL, Installing, re-installing the program. I have Corel Aftershot Pro, Adobe PS Elements 11, and CS2.

COREL really needs to address and resolve this issue because its happening in more than a few machines. I have surfed the web and there are numerous cases of PSPX5 crashing. I am glad to hear that its not just Win8 machines, Win7 & X5 machines are also having the same issues.

Please advise if you resolve the problem...Thank-you in advance.

I trust you are aware that you are not addressing Corel in this forum -- only other users just like you, including us Admin people and all the Moderators. To my knowledge, the only Corel employee who ever comes to these forums -- even if only occasionally -- is Simone Corel UK, and she has made it clear she only does so in a private and limited capacity.

Sure, we'll advise if we learn of a resolution. But don't wait for any announcement from Corel here on the forums!

I understand. I'm just sharing my experience with users like myself. I have my own thread with the boys of COREL. Thanks for the info.

RE: x5 crashing

I went to Start, typed in 'database', Restore Database was an option & Clicked REstore Database on the X5 icon.

I had read on another forum that cleaning the data base helps keep X5 from crashing so I just did the Restore Database when that came up. Been using it for 40 minutes creating a graphic and it didn't crash. Prior it crashed when ever I got a few steps into a PSP graphic or tutorial.

Using Win7 Pro, 32bit
