Also thanks for the tip about saving and re-opening the image before re-sizing. The layer style drop shadow still gets blurred a bit too much, but it does at least retain its relative positioning. The various methods of creating a raster layer containing the drop shadow seem to be the only way to maintain the proper amount of blurring (as well as positioning); but, of course, are useless if the text needs to be changed at a later date. For now, I'll just have to remember to apply the text drop shadow as the very last step....
