Create simple faded mask

Post by terrypin »

I'm probably missing some simple method here. How can I most easily make a mask consisting of a white circle on a black background, with the white faded evenly through grey to black? I've drawn a filled white circle, selected it with the magic wand suitably feathered, like this.

But how do I now get the outer area smoothly faded please?

None of the built-in masks seem to meet this requirement, even in a tightly cropped 400 x 400 form.

Well, you can re-fill it with white and it should mix with the background in the feathered areas.

You can also use a blur command on the white circle such as Gaussian or any of the others PSP provies.

You could also invert the selection and fill with black. This would make the white circle smaller though.

You can also fill in the white area with a simple white to black sunburst gradient.

Also make a black layer and then do Effects --> Photo Effects--> Vignette in X4 and adjust to get desired size and amount of blur.

That worked after a fashion, but the result changed each time I clicked in the area. And I wasn't intuitively comfortable with what I was doing.

That didn't fade to black, just to light grey.

That too did not fade to black.

That worked fine thanks. It needed use of Edit on the gradient but after some trial/error I got a good result.

Thanks, I thought I'd specified PSP 8 but see that I didn't, sorry!

Since you want to create a mask,
1. Create your circular selection.
2. Feather that selection.
3. Then create the mask, choosing the "Show selection" option.
