Hello,
I have owned previous versions of Paint Shop Pro, but decided to upgrade again.
I really like Paint Shop Pro X4, and it has worked for me in the past on this same machine (Windows 7 HP laptop).
For some reason PSPx4 will not open -- ever -- not at all. The cursor spins continuously. I need to end the program manually.
I have installed Corel PSPx4 service pack 3 and this did not help. My computer is healthy.
I have not tried installing and reinstalling PSPx4 because I can't find my disc, but I'm still looking ( I moved recently and I think I misplaced it).
So, how do I fix this? Why did it stop working all of a sudden? What information do you need to help me?
I'm going nuts, this software was expensive, and I have a bunch of photos to edit.
Thank you in advance for your time and helpfulness.

Have you tried resetting the Preferences? Hold down your Shift key when launching PSP and answer "Yes" to the prompt to restore the default state.
Can you think of any changes you made to your system just before PSP started failing, such as installing or uninstalling any programs?

Re: PSPx4 will not open == cursor just spins
Hi,
Thanks for your quick response. I tried opening PSPx4 using shift key and selecting yes for default state. This did not work.
I finally did find my PSPx4 disc. I deleted software, restarted computer, and reinstalled Paint shop Pro and the updates from Corel.
PSPx4 still did not open...cursor continues to spin and needs to be closed manually.
I don't recall uninstalling any software; however, I did install Acronis Backup, and Nero (all applications except backup--this was deleted).
Another program I downloaded from a site I have used in the past included a rootkit nasty which took 4 days to get rid of. That software was immediately deleted.
Recently (about 2.5 months ago) my computer was evaluated free (purchased this past February) by IT professional and given a clean bill of health (my speakers had stopped working and repaired). This was after I removed the rootkit virus.
I don't know what else to do. PSPx4 is supposed to work with Windwos 7. No changes were made to BIOS or anywhere.
What is most annoying is PSPx4 work before on this computer.
What do I do now? Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to remove the splash screen (the info screen before the main software
screen)? Perhaps doing this might get the software to work. I really miss Paint Shop Pro.
thanks again for your help, sorry this is so long.

Re: PSPx4 will not open == cursor just spins
OK, I know it' Christmas, but is anyone able to help me get PXPx4 running?
I have deleted and downloaded twice. both failed.
I have my origional receipt for purchase with all information and download links.
One of those links I used to re-download PXPx4.
What happens is the 2 screens open: the splash screen and the regular screen you edit from situated behind the splash screen.
It is at this point the cursur spins forever and does not stop. The software never completely opens and I need to close manually (control-alt-delete).
I'm getting irritated because I paid $60 for this software, installed on a brand new HP laptop with tons of memory and RAM.
There is no reason why this software should not work, expecially because it has in the past.
Why is it not working now? How do I fix this? Who do I contact to get this working?
I have not downloaded any updates because that did not help on my first re-install.
Please help....thank you in advance...

What is the status message in the splash screen when the application freezes? Something like "Updating Cache" or "Resetting the application"?

Re: PSPx4 will not open == cursor just spins
Do you have a lot of images on your computer that it might be trying to catalog. Also I read somewhere else on this forum something about a catalog database being corrupted and PSP not being able to read it and so hanging. If you leave it for some time does it eventually settle (try overnight ) .
I have two laptops with X4 running quite comfortably although I only installed SP1 (the colour tools) , and not Sp2 (corrrected the Tab documents problem) or Sp3 . So it will run on Windows 7 machines, but every machine is different with their own possibly conflicting programs.
You might try the bare bones one without any service packs being installed and see if it works. If so then install SP1 and again test to see if works. You may then be able to isolate if one of the Service packs is causing problems with your system

Re: PSPx4 will not open == cursor just spins
Reading this I'd normally suggest a PC maintenance schedule. That would be my first option after a complete remove and reinstall of the program. Run disc repair. This should fix any registry errors.
It's hard to help you without having the PC in front to see what's going on.
I'm not sure the idea of catch is the right thing to be looking at. PSP only tries to catch the images in a file you select, not the totally content of your PC.
Install the programs outside of the ProgramData file may help.
Get and run Malwarebytes. You get a free trial. Update it before running a scan. There maybe malware that's affecting the PC performance.
There doesn't seam to be any other reason for this. X4 is made for Win7.

My computer just started doing the same thing, says Updating Cache Settings... is all it says. Was working fine earlier today. Version 14.3.0.3. Malware scan is fine. Any suggestions?

Re: PSPx4 will not open == cursor just spins
So I decided to uninstall and reinstall as per this board. Now I need an activation code. Now I have to wait to call until Monday because it's past 7pm. Nice going Corel. The amount of anger I'm feeling right now is hard to put into words. One minute the program works, next minute it doesn't. Can't repair, have to uninstall/reinstall, can't activate without calling, can't call for another 2 days. So I have to find another program to use until Monday. I bought the program, I have a serial number, why do I also need an activation code? Thanks Corel. I used PSP7 for years without a single problem. Updating to X4 was a big mistake.
