open type fonts.
Hi all. I'm new here but for from new to PSP. I've used PSP8 for years and now are using PSP X1. I got PSP 4 but I'm not a fan at all. Anyway I've got a new PC running Win7 64 bit pro. The thing is PSP has decided it want use Adobe open style fonts. The True Type are fine. The open style do show in the fonts list and when used they do create a new vector layer and show the writing in the layers column. The thing is they don't show on the image. They used to work fine before but not now.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Doug.

Re: open type fonts.
Thanks guy's, @Ken, I didn't quite understand what you meant but after reading the other thread it makes sense now so thanks. I don't think trying the fix would be a good idea.
It was funny you mentioned malware, I got hit with a trojon for the first time ever last night! A scam trying to get money to fix it. Spent some time talking to the police and consumer protection this morning. Anyway, I got it removed and all is good now.
At least next time I'll be ready to deal with it. I hope
Doug.

Re: open type fonts.
Doug, glad to hear you got the Trojan removed. Like I said in the other thread, it's unacceptable that Corel is forcing users to choose between security and features.

Re: open type fonts.
Technically, Microsoft is.
This patch broke Open Type Fonts for a lot of programs even Microsoft's. This is because anyone using Microsoft's built in features have broken. Or at least should have.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2753842
But I am curious, these don't render. But what happens when you convert the text to a regular object? Does it show up then? Obviously not an ideal workaround if it works, but you could remain secure and continue to use open Type Fonts that way.

So maybe Microsoft will come out with a patch for the patch. Only thing we can really blame Corel for is using the built-in APIs for rendering fonts. And knowing Corel, I wouldn't really want them to be making their own font functions. Perhaps a bit pessimistic on my part.We are aware of issues related to OpenType Font (OTF) rendering in applications such as PowerPoint on affected versions of Windows that occur after this security update is applied. We are currently investigating these issues and will take appropriate action to address the known issues.

Re: open type fonts.
Going on the message from Microsoft it's not just Coral being affected. Good news for Corael because it's now a Microsoft problem to fix and good news for me as well because this means when it's fix I can still use the better version (XI) This is bad news for a poster in the other thread as it seams his business revolves around Paintshop. If I was him I'd load at least one machine with XP and use that to supply his clients with the PSP's he has in stock. Not much consolation but at least it would keep him working.LeviFiction wrote:Technically, Microsoft is.This patch broke Open Type Fonts for a lot of programs even Microsoft's. Re: open type fonts.
Technically, the jury is still out on why the patch has affected some programs.
I've seen reports complaining that it affects CorelDraw, yet CDRX5 continues to use Open Type fonts just fine here.

Re: open type fonts.
Oh boy! Looks like this one will take a while to resolve, then.
The bad thing about it is that these inconsistencies mean I can't castigate Corel about it as much as I would like!

Re: open type fonts.
Today (December 20, 2012), Microsoft released version 2 of KB2753842. It was a Microsoft problem with a lot of software, not just a Corel problem with Corel software. (i.e. Microsoft patched the patch.
Check out "More information"...)

Ah, yes. Windows Update caught the patch and applied it -- now PSPX5 renders Open Type fonts OK. Nice job by MS for solving the problem so quickly.

Yes, just got the update and all is good again in the land of Corel. WD MicroSoft.

FWIW
I did not experience these problems, but for some it's good to see that Microsoft fixed its faulty patch...

Re: open type fonts.
I'm using Windows XP and hadn't done a Windows update in months. Well, today I got zapped by the font bug by installing the trial version of Microsoft's Publisher 2010. It apparently installed the faulty update and it broke my fonts. All of my emails appeared to be blank and I wondered what in the heck was going on until I remembered about the font bug. I'm hoping that doing a full Windows update will fix the problem because all of the system fonts except Arial and Times New Roman are currently invisible.
Using Paint Shop Pro versions 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16
