What is the trick to viewing PSP files with Explorer

Post by ronj2 »

Using Vista 64 Viewing PSP files with explorer has proven to be a pain. I have installed Fast Picture Viewer and the PSP file handler and none do anything. I have folder options setup correctly. With X2 I had no problems but starting with X4 and now X5 I have to guess what the file is by the name. I only save PSP files when in layers. PSD don't show either when in layers but do show as a single file (not PSP though). There must be some way to see a thumbnail. I can't even see them from within PSPX5 itself while in Edit mode until I open it up. Why does Corel not make at Codex so we can view their own product properly. Also I know I can browse using the Manage section of PSP but prefer not too as it has alway been too buggy, I only use the edit section.

Thanks.

FWIW, here's what I've got happening here in PSPX5 on Win7 x64:
a) I used a command prompt with elevated privileges to register the PSP shell extension DLL.
b) I've got the SageThumbs shell extension installed, also.
c) In Windows Explorer I see thumbnails of PSPIMAGE files (with and without layers) just fine; but since SageThumbs also displays PSPIMAGE files, I don't know which DLL is responsible.
d) In PSPX5, the fileopen dialog does not show PSPIMAGE files as images in the main thumbnail section. Selecting a file does show the image in the preview area. However, if I first browse to the directory using Windows Explorer, then the PSPX5 fileopen dialog correctly shows all PSPIMAGE files in the thumbnail section.

It's obviously a question of the thumbnail cache being created.

FWIW I am able to view thumbnails of pspimage files in Explorer for both X4 and X5. In the Explorer Open dialog box, is the Show Preview button checked in the lower left hand corner?

Before anything else, you may want to setup PSP as your default photo editing program - http://corel.force.com/index/articles/e ... age-viewer

Thanks for the suggestions. PSP is my default and I have the check box for previews checked and if I click on a thumbnain from within PSP edit mode I can see the tiny preview but that's it and only from within PSP not outside of it. This is a big issue on the net many folks can't view thumnails while others can. I still want to know why Corel won't make a simple codex to eliminate all this hassle. I'm not going to start modifing the Registry if I don't have to. Between this and the crashes and bugs PSP always seems to have I would have no problems jumping ship if another software company made something simular but cheaper than PS, PS I just don't care for although I liked CS6 the best. For some reason my computer just does not like PSP files, everything else seems fine. Even when you select the defult files from within windows dialog box PSP is the only file not listed. The PSP file extension does not exist on my Vista 64 OS. For some reason Corel apparently had not made a deal with windows to include its file format as a standard and I believe it is some form of politics that is the real culprit here. Windows 7 or 8 might be different. If you have the PSP extension listing on your computer let me know.

Any other ideas?

In Xp I have view thumbnails set and .psp files show there.
If I set View --> Details and I select a .psp file I see the image in the left margin under Details.
The .psp files do not show the images on the desktop, only a lens icon and show default open in X5.

In Windows 7 the psp.files show the small image as the icon (so as many different icons as images) and this applies to jpg files as well.
In Details view, jpgs show at bottom and at right in preview panel, bu .psp files only show at bottom and no preview panel image shows.
Switching to show extra large icons bot jpgs amd psp files show images but again psp image not available in preview panel.

I do not have vista to test this out on. This may be a Vista only "feature".
Systems available Win7, Win 8.1,Win 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.2007 & version 20H2 Build 19042.867

I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro when they had the $39 promo and now I can view PSP files just like jpegs so problem solved. I also like W8 much better than Vista, it's a much more responsive OS.
