Rendering - how long should it take?
Hi - I have a 45 minute film and have burned it to disk no problem but I am also saving it as an mp4 to my computer - it is taking ages..... been going at least a couple of hours and is currently 41% complete. I am using VSX4. Just wondered if it should take this long or if it is just me!! I have a fairly decent computer and don't normally have memory issues so thought you may be able to help me.Thank you.

Re: Rendering - how long should it take?
Hi
Rendering video files does take time, there are several factors involved, your pc capabilities for a start, maybe you could update your profile to include these, you can use the Baleric Advisor to help identify your pc. The details will then show to the right of your posts, I am sure someone will understand them.
The type of file you are using and the type you are converting to also effects the duration.
If you were converting say MT type to MT type then the render would be relatively quick, convert MT to WMV and it will take much longer.
I guess you could tell us exactly what you are using.?
When I started video editing, a long time ago rendering DV-Avi to SVCD -Mpeg2 took 8 hours to render a 40 minute video.
The next pc took that down to 2.25 hrs, now its practically real time.
The amount of edits you have applied to the project will also slow the process, Smart Sound clips I found were notoriously slow, I normally convert them to Wav, things may have improved though.
If you tell us what you are using then somebody may have similar files and do a comparison.

Re: Rendering - how long should it take?
Just as an indication: on my i7, when I convert a HDV project to a new HDV file (high def mpeg-2), the render occurs in real time i.e. a 40 minute project takes (just under) 40 minutes. But if I render the same project to AVCHD (high def mpeg-4), it takes more than twice the time.
