Jerky playback within the timeline
Not had this before, just put a couple of minutes clip into the timeline ready to edit and when I play through it, the video is jerky/jittery on playback. If I click on it in the library and play it without pulling it in to the timeline, it is fine, and if I click on the video without opening the programme, it also plays fine ? If you watch the timeline scrubber as the video jerks, you can see a trial of little white shadows that the scubber leaves behind as it stutters ? Can anyone offer any help ? I have tried with other clips and it does exactly the same ! The clip is AVCHD clip, and.... I have let it create a smart proxy file before playing it.

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
Can you confirm whether or not the jerkiness also occurs when you render the project into a new file? I used to use a Quad like yours, and the preview was usually jerky with AVCHD. I just learned to ignore it as the end product, after rendering, was always smooth.

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
That is interesting.....I will render a short file and see what happens, and will let you know. The only thing I can not understand is that I have made several projects with the same camera and same AVCHD files since I bought Corel a few months ago and this is the first time I have seen this issue. Will Post back later !

just rendered a file and as you say, it is ok now when played back so will just carry on and ignore it and see what happens
Thanks

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
Now looking at project properties....on the general tab, mine is showing 720 x 576 so I assume that if I am editing 1920 x 1080, this is what it should be set at but it won`t let me change this setting....any ideas ?

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
Hi
You are correct in seeing the Project Properties for standard definition video
We have approached Corel many times regarding HD settings for project properties.
In reality the project properties are irrelevant provided they use 16:9 ratio.
When you Share Create Video File do not use Same as Project Properties but choose one of the HD templates, Same as First Clip—if available—will use your videos properties.
There is one exception, thats when taking a “snapshot”
In Clip Playback it will create an image using the video files dimensions (1920 x 1080)
In Project Playback mode it will take a snapshot of the screen content using the Project Properties size, adjusted for 16:9. The image will be smaller than the video dimensions and consequently lower quality
Do a few tests then view the images dimensions.
All is not lost
There is a workround, we can change the project properties frame size to 1920 x 1080.
Edit the project properties using AVI with a Microsoft DV compression, you should be able to User Define the frame size to 1920 x 1080.
DivX would also work.
Still the option Share Create Video File –Same as Project Properties will be of little use.

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
Thanks for this information Trevor, the only bit I can`t understand is the "Microsoft dv setting"........there is several options in the panel but not exactly what you said ?
The thing that is really troubling me is that I have used the same computer, the same programme, and the same camera several times without this issue. I take a holiday to Spain and when I come back, this problem appears, I know that video editing needs a lot of patience but sometimes these little problems are really frustrating.
Regards
Martyn

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
I have moved forward with my Jerky playback problem, although not sorted it, can anyone offer any advice please. I have just been editing some hd video in the timeline and whilst I was previewing it, I just happened to open my control panel for my NVidia card (Just to see if this wanted updating or something) and to my suprise the video went very smooth whilst this panel was open ? I closed it, and the jerky playback returned ? Tried now 10 or 12 times and it is just like magic.......as soon as i open the panel, my problem as gone..................please help !!

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
If you have a dual GPU system, where less demanding programs can be set to use the graphics chip on the motherboard and more demanding ones can be set to use the better, separate NVidia card, then find out from NVidia how you go about setting it. I have a dual system but with an AMD graphics main card. Each time I use a program for the first time, a message appears from the AMD Catalyst 'control center' asking me which graphics I want to use for that program. I have VS set to use the main AMD card as video editing -- particularly AVCHD -- demands a lot of computer resources.
I imagine you could also go into your computer BIOS -- as I can -- and actually set the NVidia card to be constantly on. But this should not be necessary and the extra heating caused by the more demanding card being permanently on, could have other deleterious effects on your computer...

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
Hi Martyn
Regarding the project properties frame size and taking a Snapshot.
Change the Project Properties (Alt+Enter) to use Edit File Format as AVI
Edit
Avi tab
Compression to Microsoft Video 1 (sorry for any confusion.)
General Tab
User Define frame size
Also set the frame rate to match your video files rate.
Now taking a Snapshot in Project Playback will use the correct frame size.

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
Thanks Trevor, i have done this but unfortunately it has not sorted out my stutter problem, the only way at the moment to edit with a smooth playback is to open another window on my screen and the video runs smoothly ?
The other thing to add is that I have tried loading the same footage into Pinnacle 14 HD ( which I prefer not to use against a much more stable Videostudio) and pinnacle works fine ? I am lost for ideas.

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
Hi
I do not have a NVidea card so know little about its application.
I did a google and one bit of info seemed to suggest that the card may be automatically activated depending on what you are doing on the pc.
Opening the NVidia control panel may affect the auto setting either switching on or off the card.
I also found a tutorial on You Tube regarding Optimizing Performance in NVidia Control Panel, may be worth a look
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... -9sgohBIHs
Sorry I cannot advise on any settings you should set but feel that a tick in the right box may cure your problem?

Re: Jerky playback within the timeline
Thanks again...I have adjusted the settings on my NVidea card following the UTube tutorial, unfortunately it hasn`t made any difference ?
On the positive side, I finished the 1 hour long project last night and burned a file, then a Bluray disc and the results are perfect, so I will just ignore the problem for now and it may speed up my intention to upgrade my pc.
Thanks for the help !
