X5 Crashes almost EVERY time HELP!!!!!!

Post by goodhifi »

I installed a trial version of Pro X5 with Windows 7. Almost every time I try to capture video it crashes.

Camera is a Sony HDR-HC5E. The only format I am offered is MPEG. Sometimes it begins to capture, other times there is no picture on screen and nothing is captured, most times I get a NOT RESPONDING warning and Video Studio just freezes. Sometimes it works but very rarely!. I have reloaded X5 three times.

Surely this cannot be right?.

How exactly are you trying to capture? I assume via Firewire, since that is the only real way of getting the HDV off your camera in that format. And you are only offered mpeg as the capture format since HDV is in fact high def mpeg-2.

If you are trying to capture using USB, that won't work. At best you would be able to capture low quality streaming video.

While X5 and its predecessors can certainly capture HDV (I have a Canon HV20 which also films in HDV), these days I tend to use a small freeware program called HDVSplit. This is because, as its name suggests, it splits the incoming HDV by scene; and you can also assign your own name to the captured files rather than use Video Studio's rather arcane naming protocol.

But again, even with HDVSplit, you need to capture via Firewire.

Yes, I am using firewire.

I was going to buy X5 pro but if this is how stable it is I'm not prepared to waste money on it.

I don't really want to split by scene as an hour long holiday video might have a hundred scenes or more, I don't film non-stop instead I film short vignettes and often the film needs little editing. Apart from that X5 should work properly for the cost.....

Hi

So how do you get the footage from the camera to the PC :?:

Once you have the files on the pc, right click the Video Studio timeline and Insert Video

I do not use HDVSplit but would imagine it give the option to split or not, Ken will know

Hi, please read my OP again.

In it I describe how X5 crashes when I TRY to capture video so clearly I am not getting 'footage' to the PC. My OP is nothing to do with splitting the video, I'm not really interested in that at the moment because all I want to do is get X5 working so it will capture video without crashing.

Can you load the video into any other editor program?

I had a problem with FireWire and Pinnacle Studio. It was all down to the FireWire drivers and NOT the editing software. In fact I bought a second camcorder based on an SD card memory in case the problem with FireWire could not be solved. Now FireWire works so now I have both systems. I know from others that FireWire works with VSx5.
So (IMO) if you can load video into Windows MovieMaker the drivers are OK and it is VideoStudio causing the hiccup.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Hi

There have been some issues with IEEE and Windows 7 regarding the firewire driver, Ken posted some details here
http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 43#p251543

However by trying another program HDVSplit would test your pc and the firewire connections, confirming that it is a Video Studio problem or not.

As far as I know the capture would literally copy the video rather than re-coding, so Video Studio is no more than an interface, hence the only option of Mpeg video.

I cannot really advise much further as I do not use HDV or Windows 7

Thanks for giving that link Trevor -- I was going to do so myself as I read through the most recent posts, so you have relieved me of that task. But I would simply add by way of explanation that Windows 7 updates have introduced a new Firewire driver which cannot be used by Video Studio. That link provides a way of restoring the original Windows firewire drivers which are indeed compatible with VS.

Hi, Yes I can load video using Windows movie maker and HDVsplit works too. I have been using the IEEE legacy driver all the time.

However I don't think it is anything to do with that as X5 doesn't say there is no device, in fact it shows that it has found the camcorder.

It just freezes and that is that. So this is nothing to do with splitting vidoes and nothing to do with the camcorder not being seen. Now this may well be down to the driver but since the ither apps works OK I have to surmise that X5 has a compatability issue with something else.

One little clue might be that the X5 splash screen goes blank during loading of X5. At first it show the camera lens but then goes white and the app then loads.

Hi goodhifi

You seem to have covered everything in your trial captures and it does indeed to be a Video Studio issue.

I can only advise that you report this to Corel Support which you should be able to access via your Corel account, however I do not think that the trial version is supported, which seems ridicules to me.

I searched the Knowledge Base but only found details of the Firewire problem.
Error in IVIVideo.ax when capturing using firewire which I assume you have read

Thanks Trevor.

Well I'm not going to be buying something that does not work properly so it is Corels loss.
