It would help if you gave information about the computer you want to use for editing.

It is a sad but true fact that the newer programs want the newer operating systems and vice versa, old programs will struggle to run on the later operating systems. I wanted to update to Pinnacle Studio 15 but the program spec required me provide a computer to match the new program. So I bought a new machine with Win 7 (64 bit), 8 Gig of RAM etc. etc. It will now not run the old faithfulls that would have been OK under XP. Incidentally I changed to VideoStudio x5 after the Pinnacle gave me so many problems!!! On hindsight the change to VS was a good one.

There is a logic to this. People buy the latest box and expect the programmers to provide a better program to run on their new shiny box. Its called Progress!! and it is an expensive game. Do you remember when mobile phones resembled a brick? Now they are so small I can't press a button on mine without hitting at least two others and texting is a nightmare.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Hello James

Can you give a little more information regarding your video files, the type you are using.?
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
You can copy the window and create an image to attach to your post, otherwise simply type in the details.

There was an issue using QuickTime in particular later versions.
I would advise that you uninstall and re-install V 7.5.5
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL26

This may affect I-Tunes, that’s if you use that option.
If need be you can always revert back to the latest version.

Video Studio X2 update patches, have you installed those,
http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... id=1300014

Can you fill in your profile to include your PC specification, or do you know if your pc is capable of running X5. That is does it comply with the minimum requirements to use X5?
I would advise that if you are considering purchasing X5 to run the trial version first.
Video Studio X2 does not qualify for the upgrade so you would have to purchase the full version.

I have done as you suggested and downloaded a free version of X5, but cannot capture from my computer.
Is it because the programme is not compatible with Windows 7 ?

Hi James

The Capture process is used by Tape based or analogue devices.
Can you tell us the make and model of your camera?

Your Camcorder/camera will record to a Hard Drive or memory card probably a SDHC card. As such the video files are transferred to the pc in the same manner as a jpeg image, Copy and Paste or Drag and Drop.
Usually the camera is recognised by the PC as a removable drive when viewing the My Computer/Computer window.

Once the files are on the PC, right click Video Studio’s timeline and select Insert Video.

The HDC-SD9 is SD card based as are most of the Panasonic range.
Did you have a copy of HDWriter with your camera? Or are you using the USB lead to download?
If so use HDWriter to download the video files.
I have the HC-V700 with an SD card so I use the SD card reader on my PC to download the video files. The advantage of using HDWriter is that it sorts out the video files from the other data files the camera generates. (which you do not need)

VSx5 is compatable with Windows 7.

VideoStudio X2 is not compatible with Win 7 but can download Corel VideoStudio X2 Service Pack 2 - http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... id=1300014 - to fix the compatibility issue.

Hi James
AVCHD video can be difficult to edit, Video Studio uses Smart Proxy files to help in editing HD video.

The files are automatically created after inserting a clip to the timeline. The process to create the proxy files does take some time, after which playback should improve, especially project playback.

View Settings -- Smart Proxy Manager-File Manager and Queue Manager for progress.

A small double icon will show on the clip to indicate proxy files have been created.

Well, for AVCHD -- while RAM helps -- it is really the processor (CPU) we need to know about. That's one of the reasons we ask for computer details during the registration process for the forum -- saves us having to ask for them in post after post! But you need a fairly powerful processor to be able to play and edit AVCHD smoothly -- at least a decent Core 2 Duo CPU, and preferably something even more powerful. Even with a Quad 6600 I found the preview a bit jerky. Now with an i7, there are no problems with preview.

But as Trevor says, you can always use SmartProxy -- though you will still need a Core 2 Duo or higher for that too (or the very basic minimum of a Pentium IV 3.0 GHz with hyperthreading -- but they are very slow in producing an AVCHD and can't play them smoothly -- though I found they will play smoothly when transferred to a more powerful computer...)
