After installing Sp3 PSP X4 does not start

Post by Timo »

After Installing Sp3 PSP X4 does not start. I only get Error message:
Error: Versions must match.
Master = 14.2.0.1
RC = 14.3.0.1

I tried to install it also on a Windows 7 computer with same result.

What to do?

If nobody has any other ideas, I guess I have to reinstall PSP from scratch. Just a question of limited time available.

My PSP X4 is four months old, so it does not qualify for free support. I think problems caused by updates should qualify for free support and Corel should reconsider their support policy.

Although I own PSP x4 I rarely use the program, but I did a re-install and today ran the update patch without problems. My version shows as 14.2.0.1

You can reset, I guess worth trying.
Quote from the help files….
You can reset the entire application to its default state by holding down Shift while launching the program. All customization is cleared when you reset the program.

Hopefully others on the forum will reply

I did not realise there were so many uopdates, i am downloading the others now and will install to see what happens.

Ok all patches installed my version number is 14.3.0.3, no errors on start.

I am running XP so maybe its an operating system problem. I dont have Windows 8, hopefully others will reply.
Sorry i cannot look any further.

I just removed PSP X4 and reinstalled it. After intalling Sp2 it works normally, but after installing Sp3 it does not start any more but gives again the same error message as before. I guess I have to surrender and run PSP X4 with Sp2 only as long as I do not receive any new good ideas. :?

There must be some setting that's causing the problem, since I install Sp3 on my home computer using the retail version of PSP X5 with Sp2 and I was able to launch and use the program without a problem. As you can see on my Forum Profile I'm using Windows 7 64-bit home premium.

Can you right-click then run the program as ADMIN? Also try to reset PSP X4 workspace. You can do that by pressing and holding down the SHIFT key then double-click on the PSP icon then when you received the message "DO YOU WAN TO RESTORE PAINTSHOP Pro TO ITS DEFAULT STATE?" just click OK.

Thank you for your advise Abiel. Unfortunately it did not help. Looks like what ever I do, after installing Sp3 I cannot start PSPX4 any more. Somehow Sp3 is not properly installed. When opening PSPX4 the opening screen says it is still 14.2.0.1 and after that I get the error message complaining about the conflict between Master and RC. Whatever they are.

After uninstalling PSPX4 I ran CCleaner to clean registry from all scratch left behind after unsinstalling, but that did not help.

I have not had the time to try again with the Win7 computer, but maybe will try that during weekend.

Can you do a System Restore to a point before you installed SP3?

Thanks for the advise Ken,

unfortunately even that did not help. Anyway this computer is brand new (3 weeks by now) and should be pretty close to the original settings.

I read in your system specs operating_system: Windows 8. PSPX4 wasn't made for Windows 8. There might be a context. Please try X5 and if you like it, you can buy an upgrade.

While that is always possible. Corel does claim that it should perform perfectly well on Windows 8. If this is the case you might want to tell the testers to double check their findings. Wouldn't want to give people the wrong impression after all. Or we can assume the compatibility list is correct and start looking for a different solution.

EDIT: Sorry, Timo. I should have paid more attention.

I had a customer with that error message. But he had the RC of Windows 8, which isn't the same as a sold version.
Another one installed the trial on Window 8 RC and it worked fine. Then he bought a DVD version, removed trial, installed DVD, and nothing worked. Only the download version worked.
I have never tested X4 on Windows 8, because officially, it's not made for Windows 8.
It's different to "you can install it and it should work" as this list suggests: http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... d=13400255
What's important is that list: http://www.corel.com/corel/product/inde ... 00067#tab5 . Here I have to support, because we give the warranty.

Thank you for your response Simone.

I don't think it is a Windows 8 issue. As mentioned, I tested it also on a Windows 7 desk top, with same result. PSPX4 works perfectly with SP2, but installing SP3 results to the mentioned error message and shutting down of PSPX4. For now I'm using only SP2.

Stupid question, I know, but have you disabled all kinds of hinder-software? I remember that installing a patch for X5 on my system was impossible as our AV software deleted it immediately.
Because you are the only one with that error, there must be something running that deletes or doesn't allow to actualize a file and result is that mismatch. If you get the same error on 2 machines, that means that both systems have got that whatever it is.

My first question would be is"why is a AV treating this Sp3 like a virus in the first place?" No matter what you do to get this patch installed the AV will try to kill it. You could disable the AV, install the patch, Check to see if the program runs. If yes then you know your AV is deleting/removing some files.

The thing still remains is when you re-activate the VA and it dose a systems scan you'll be right back to not having PSP at all, or no AV of cause.

I'd leave it as is with Sp2 and wait to see if Corel will fix their patch. If not then I'd just stay with what works.

Then you could do what Corel would prefer you do and upgrade to X5. The only trouble is then you'll have a whole new set of issues to deal with....hahaha....

I made one more try with my Win7 computer by first really removing PSPX4 completely with Revo Uninstaller and then installing PSPX4 14.2.0.1. It opened OK and when closing it I downloaded Sp3 again and installed it. And surprise surprise, PSP 14.3.0.3 works perfectly. :D It looks like there was a new version, because earlier the error message complained about version 14.3.0.1.

I'll still have to test with the Win8 laptop.
